WRITING AN EFFECTIVE LITERATURE REVIEW
Thursday, October 6th, 2011
11:30 – 1:30
Education room #2014

*Open to All College of Education Graduate Students

Seminar Description and Purpose:

Boote and Beile (2005) argue that whether one’s post-doctoral program pursuits include academia, teaching, administration or other forms of educational leadership, those with doctorates in education have a responsibility to have a sophisticated understanding of the literature in her/his field. Yet, they claim, “the dirty little secret known by those who sit on dissertation committees is that most literature reviews are poorly conceptualized and written” (p. 4). This, they argue, is by oversight of an education community that has not clearly articulated the value and purpose of the literature review. Writing a literature review may be the most challenging element of a thesis/dissertation but knowing how to frame, synthesize, and critique a corpus of literature may lead to an effective literature review that is more than a ‘shopping list’ of readings.

The purpose of this seminar is to assist graduate students with the processes of researching and writing a literature review. Questions to be addressed include:

	What is the purpose of the literature review in a thesis/dissertation?
	What is the difference between summarizing and synthesizing literature?
	How is a literature review conceptually framed?
	What criteria can be used to evaluate an effective literature review?

References to examples of effective literature reviews and resources for writing literature reviews will be provided.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to read the article by Boote and Beile (2005) as referenced below.

This seminar is open to all graduate students in the College of Education. Please RSVP to Dr. Bonnie Stelmach (bonnie.stelmach@usask.ca ) before October 1, 2011.

CHINA STUDY TOUR 2011
EADM 498 / 892: Organization and Administration of Education in China Spring and Summer Term 1

April 22 - May 3, 2011 (plus two additional Saturdays in advance) Beijing - Yinchuan - Xi'an, People's Republic of China

This course traces major trends in Chinese educational development from ancient origins to contemporary socialist governance. The purpose of this course is to increase our understanding of how the political and cultural contexts influence the purposes, design, and operations of public education and school systems. The content is designed to provide a basis for further in-depth study of concepts and processes in educational settings within the People’s Republic of China and in Canada. The class will be conducted in a combined seminar and school visitation format, and will require students to participate in and lead discussions and activities on a regular and frequent basis. Given the comparative nature of this course, we welcome every opportunity for students to apply what they are reading and thinking about to their work contexts. We ask students to share these insights throughout the class.

Instructors: Dr David Burgess & Dr Michael Cottrell

This course and associated tour offers students and other participants the opportunity to visit and experience China, with a particular academic focus on developments in the education system since 1975. The course is open to all interested graduate and undergraduate students in the College.

More information is available by contacting Dr David Burgess by email at david.burgess@usask.ca

Confirmation date is March 1, 2011, and requires a non-refundable cheque made payable to "University of Saskatchewan" in the amount of $500 per person. Registration in the course will be available later in February.

<
Departures from the Office

Today is Susan Crush’s last day in the office for EADM. Please direct all inquires to Sheila Carr-Stewart at sheila.carr-stewart@usask.ca or 966-7611.

<
On Leave

Sue Piot is still away from the office on leave. Any inquiries can be directed to Sheila as well.

<
A Warm Invitation from Field Experiences, College of Education University of Saskatchewan (from Angela Ward)

This is a special invitation to you as a current graduate student in our College. We are just now in the process of recruiting for people to work with us as cooperating teachers for internship in September 2009.

As part of our program renewal, and working with our partner school divisions, we have begun to transform the internship experience for both our interns and their cooperating teachers. We are conceptualizing the internship as a site for scholarly thinking about professional learning, and are using more open-ended materials, as well as developing inservices responsive to teachers' needs. The College of Education, in conjunction with our field-based partners and the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation, is encouraging teachers to take this opportunity to work closely with others who are committed to high quality, lifelong teacher education.

We would welcome the opportunity to strengthen our connections with you, our graduate students, and envision our work together as mutually beneficial. In recognition of your contribution, we are offering ECUR 832 (Practicum in Professional Learning) as a graduate credit course that would include your work in the internship as its major project. The course would involve meeting for one Saturday in September, doing some reading of articles around professional learning, and writing a paper on your learnings from the internship supervision experience.

Unfortunately, we cannot pay your tuition fees, but hope that this would be an opportunity to include field-based work in your graduate degree. Of course, if you are completing your degree, and do not need credit, we would still welcome you as a co-operating teacher. If you know of other teachers who might be interested in beginning a graduate degree, perhaps you could pass this information on to them. We hope it might encourage them to apply for a graduate program in our College.

If you are interested in being a co-operating teacher, you can apply online through the Field Experiences website http://www.usaskxa/education/program/fieldexperiencej/jndex.php/. If you would like more information about graduate credit, please contact me, Angela Ward (Assistant Dean) at angela.ward@usask.ca.
You would also need to make sure that the course would be acceptable as an elective on your program.

If you are interested in this opportunity as an elective/credit for your Master’s Program, please contact Sheila Carr-Stewart at sheila.carr-stewart@usask.ca or 966-7611.

Additionally, those of you with teaching experience who will be full time graduate students next year are encouraged to apply to supervise interns as college supervisors. This could happen on a part-time basis, supervising 10 interns and cooperating teachers within and around Saskatoon.
