Information from TWB Meeting #4

Topic: Review Bake Sale, discuss next meeting

***CONGRATULATIONS ON THE BAKE SALE!***
****THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE HELP!****

Task: Talk to Sherry Pederson in May about putting info into acceptance package (Carmen will do this in May)
Task: Decide how we will deal with having an executive that is mostly out of the city in the fall (many will be on internship) - Maybe look into some online conferencing? We are thinking it will be important to have at least ONE executive in the city. If anyone has suggestions about good online conferencing software (free haha) that would be great.

Task: We are thinking about doing most of the planning for fall/winter '09/10 events this spring. Maybe then it won't matter so much if the executive is in the city or not.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We will have our next meeting on Thursday, April 2nd at 5:30pm in the Language Arts Resource Room (room 2014). (Hopefully this time and place work better for more people so everyone can make it). We will be voting on/electing the executive committee at this meeting, so check out the positions (as posted in the constitution), find one you are interested in, and go for it on Thursday! Please email me at cea074@mail.usask.ca if you can't come.

BAKE SALE SUCCESS!

Hi everyone!

Thanks for all of your baking and time! Our bake sale was a huge success! Amazing! We made more than we need for ratification so we will have some money to work with later! Clearly, we are awesome!

Carmen

Ps. I haven't had time to put up the info from Tuesday's meeting yet, but I will have it up by this afternoon!

Information from Meeting #3 (March 17, 2009)

TWB Meeting 3
March 17, 2009
Topics: Bake Sale, Constitution (discussing positions)

Sorry it took so long for me to post this, here is what happened at our last meeting:

Task: Explain executive positions in new Constitution – When do we want to do elections?
- take a look at the constitution for next meeting, then meeting after that we will have voting. We will change the day and time of the meeting in which we all vote so that everyone can come (we are thinking maybe Thursday April 2 at 4:00?) Ashlyn and Carmen will talk to Angela Ward about seeing if our executives can intern in or around Saskatoon.

Task: Kara and Carmen still have to open bank account- Where? Affinity Credit Union (8th street).

Task: Sign up on Bake sale sheet for work times and baking

Task: Advertise for the bake sale – how and who will be in charge (Kelly will do advertising posters and email Sherry Pederson)

Task: Geraldine will talk to Sherry Pederson about putting information about TWB in the Ed acceptance packages (I have heard back from Geraldine, and we will be able to do this but it will electronic because they are trying to make the whole acceptance package electronic)

Task: Community Schools- Kelly called Saskatoon Public, Saskatoon Greater Catholic, and Prairie Spirit school divisions to find out which schools are perimeter schools and need funding but don't get it. She is waiting to hear back from the Saskatoon divisions.

Task: What will we charge for items at bake sale – dollar for everything (just because it's easiest). If the items are little, we can sell two for 1 dollar.

Task: Msg the EWB and keep them updated (Carmen will do this)

Next Meeting:
Tuesday March 24th at 3:00 in the language arts Resource Room. Our meeting time will change for the week of March 30th (this change may be permanent if it works for most people) because we want to elect/vote for executives for next year during this meeting and want EVERYone there!

Again, if you have any comments, suggestions, or changes, post them here and we will discuss them at a meeting.

Information from Meeting #2 (March 10, 2009)

TWB Meeting 2
March 10, 2009
Topics: Ratification, Bake Sale

Hi everyone,

At our second TWB meeting we discussed ratification and some fundraising ideas (we decided on a bake sale to help raise money for our ratification fee and to get our name more well known so we can recruit members!). Here is our list of questions and things to do/who is going to do it!

- Question: Do we apply for ratification now and then again in May? Would we have to pay the yearly fee twice then?
Answer: Apply in May only

- Question: There is a yearly fee of $100.00, so how should we raise money for that before we apply?
Answer: Do a Bake Sale on Tuesday March 24th and Wednesday March 25th.

- Task: Open a bank acct. for the group (Ashlyn will research which bank would be best, then Carmen and Kara will open an account)

-Task: Adjust the constitution to fit our group (Ashlyn, Jeremy, Carmen, and Kaleb will meet this Thursday 4:30 in the student's lounge to make changes, then they will present the new version to the group at our next meeting.)

- Task: Fill out form and register as a non-profit corporation in Saskatchewan (not totally sure who will take care of this, Carmen will email a few members)

- Task: Find some faculty support (Janet McVitty and Geraldine Balzer attended this meeting and may be interested in working with us)

-Task: Start a Facebook page for the group (Kara will work on this)

-Task: Create a write up for the plasma screen in Education and put up information on the PD board (Ashlyn and Jason are on this one)

- Task: Find meeting space that isn't the students lounge (it's too loud) (Geraldine offered to open the Language Arts resource center on the 2nd floor in Education for us on Tuesdays at 3:00! Awesome!)

-Task: Get food license for Tuesday Mar. 24th and Wednesday Mar. 25th for our BAKE SALE! YAY! (Jeremy will take care of this)

Anyone who was unable to make it to today's meeting but would still like to help out with one of these tasks can just email me (cea074) and I will put you in contact with the right people. Also, feel free to post comments or suggestions about what we discussed or ideas you may have!

Next Meeting:

Tuesday March 17th at 3:00pm in the Language Arts Resource Center on the 2nd floor of Education
Topics: Bake sale (sign up sheet for working the table and baking), present constitution.

I know there are some people who cannot make it to our meetings at this time because of classes etc. Please know that our meetings are usually no longer than half an hour, and I put up basically EVERYTHING we talk about on this blog. Feel free to comment, make suggestions, and/or volunteer to help out with things by posting here!

Finally, I will email the URL for this website to everyone this week, but after that, since everyone hates getting TONS of email, everyone should just check this site once a week or so to stay updated

Information from Meeting #1 (March 3, 2009)

Hi everyone!

Today, Tuesday March 3rd, we had a really good first meeting for our new TWB On Campus Chapter. There were a lot of interesting ideas about different initiatives our group could undertake in Saskatoon and outside the city.

What Is TWB?

Basically, TWB-Canada is a part of TWB International, as an on campus chapter we will work under TWB-Canada. TWB Canada is a non-profit, NGO with no religious or political affiliations, they do, however, promote the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As such, they strongly believe in not “planting flags,” but instead working with communities all over the world to “close the educational divide” in a respectful and mutually beneficial way. TWB-Canada accomplishes this goal by sending teams of teachers to do teacher training and workshops all over the world. (For more information see their website at http://twbcanada.ning.com/#)

What Does TWB-Canada UofS On Campus Chapter do?

As an on campus chapter, our role in the organization is to “think globally and act locally.” The leaders from other Canadian on campus chapters advised us to begin locally by finding an initiative in our city or province and going ahead with that! At the meeting we discussed a number of different ideas for local initiatives:
- Find ways to support/improve rural schools’ libraries
- Are there are local schools that need computers/equipment?
- Could we find ways to support Aboriginal schools?
- Possibly implement a “Bagel and a Book” program at a local school
- Have TWB bins around the university for people to donate school supplies and then distribute these to local schools in need.

If you can think of any more ideas please email them to me- I will add them to the list, and you can bring them up at a future meeting.

Although we are planning on starting locally, we may want to support some international TWB initiatives. We would do this by raising money, collecting resources to send abroad, and increasing awareness about educational issues.

First things first!

Before we begin work on any of these awesome ideas, we have a few administrative things we need to take care of:

- Make a website (Ashlyn has agreed to work on this)
- Get at least 20 members or prospective members (names, emails, and student numbers) – So tell everyone you know and have them come to the next meeting! Community members are welcome! (Although membership must be minimum 75% UofS Students’ Union members)
- Get some faculty support
- Create a constitution (Please look over the example one at this link and email me back with any suggestions/comments/changes you would like to see made: http://twboncampus.org/startachapter.php
- Register as a Non-Profit Corporation in Saskatchewan

Once these items are completed we will be ready to become a ratified campus group and consider elections!

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be Tuesday March 10th at 3:00pm, I will email you in a few days when I figure out where! We would like to have the whole group at this meeting if possible. We will discuss the constitution, and divide up the things we need to do to become ratified.

Thanks to everyone for showing interest and I hope you are all as excited as I am to see this group get off the ground! Think of the things we can do!!
