CRAFT COUNCIL NEWS
01. WinterGreen Fine Craft Market 2011

The 36th annual WinterGreen Fine Craft Market is approaching quickly. In three weeks (November 18-20), over 80 SCC marketers take over the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina, including 11 NEW exhibitors to the market. The market will also include musical acts and wandering carollers. Back by popular demand, a Media Challenge! The "Media Spin" will challenge Regina media to spin wool into yarn using hand spindles.

We've done a tremendous amount of work to improve promotion for this year's WinterGreen, including adding 2 new radio stations in Regina and Moose Jaw, as well as 5 rural papers through SWNA.

There are a few things you can do to help us spread the word about the market:

Send your friends, family and coworkers a link to the SCC WinterGreen section of our website for a look at this year's marketers, and to download a $1 off Adult weekend pass coupon.

Let people know that WinterGreen will be featured on Groupon from November 4-9, where they can get 2 adult 3 day passes for the price of 1 ($5 for a $10 value).

If you are on Facebook, go to the Facebook WinterGreen event page and, even if you aren't attending yourself (although we hope you do!) Invite your friends.

There are also a few Complimentary weekend passes left - so if you know of a Craft Appreciator in the Regina area that should be at WinterGreen, email Amanda Bosiak with their mailing address.

04. Call for Images for use in SCC promotions

The Saskatchewan Craft Council is always interested in eye-catching, mouth watering, and stunning photos of SCC members' pieces for use in SCC promotions. It is an opportunity for SCC to feature the work of members while creating interest and desire in the viewing public to attend one of our events.

A single image is chosen to represent an SCC event. For example WinterGreen has a single image used on billboards, posters, and magazine, newspaper and website ads.

To have your images considered you must meet the following criteria:

Technical specifications - optimum file size 10MB or larger, good lighting and sharp focus are also necessary. Professional photography is preferred.
Striking imagery appropriate for SCC events: markets, annual report, general advertising, and exhibitions.
Powerful images that positively represents an SCC Fine Craft medium. The SCC has over 400 members who work in over 20 mediums.

FOR SALE OR RENT
01. Gallery For Sale in Mortlach

The Crocus Ridge Gallery in Mortlach is up for sale (click here for ad). Marilyn Forbes, the founder, says she's getting a little too old to continue. We disagree, but its her decision.

This is a wonderful little gallery in a refurbished church in Mortlach. Marilyn has been carrying the work of many Saskatchewan Craft Artists for years - and the gallery shows off this work to great advantage.

But there's another advantage going to whoever purchases this gallery. That's the town of Mortlach itself.

Mortlach is just off the TransCanada Highway, 43 km west of Moose Jaw. The town of 327 has a K-12 school and features such as high speed internet. But that's just the beginning - let's go to the real estate mantra: Location, Location, Location.

During the summer months, an average of 3,000 vehicles per day pass by Mortlach - making it a great gallery location for the tourist traffic. But even more important - the Crocus Ridge Gallery has great neighbours in Mortlach. There's a cluster of cultural and tourism-related businesses that create a synergistic effect. Helping to make Mortlach a great place to visit (and operate a Craft gallery) are:

The K and K Training Stables and the Mortlach Riding Academy - these landmark equestrian facilities bring hundreds of horse lovers to Mortlach every year.
Prairie Berries - located just a few miles north, bring in the Saskatoon Berry lovers to pick and feast.
Holleyhock Natural Foods - an organic market with everything from lobster to gourmet bread and ice-cream.
The Country Garden Cafe and Tea House. Yum. We'll say no more.
The David Krughoff Gallery - a large gallery featuring the wildlife photography of David Krughoff.
The Country Garden General Store - formerly the Nowhere Candy Store. This still has candy from around the world, but has also added more wholesome, but still tasty, food.
The Thunder Creek Trading Post and Rock Shop - everything from dinosaur bones to metaphysical supplies.

It's safe to say - operating a gallery in a small town - it's tough to get this kind of critical mass in neat places to bring in visitors. The Star Phoenix just ran a piece on one of the town's new residents - Ryan Boldt of the folk roots band Deep Dark Woods.

So... If you've ever thought it would be a good idea to operate a gallery in a small town - you can't do any better than the Crocus Gallery in Mortlach. Give Marilyn a call at 306.355.2597, or email her at crocusridgegallery@hotmail.com.
