Thorv 109.3 (unisex washroom) is now open. Please note that the washrooms in Thorvaldson will be renovated for wheelchair access in the near future.

Canada Safeway Scholarships

Scholarship for young adults 17 to 27 years of age who live with a neuromuscular disorder.

Scholarship candidates must be a registered client of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. One Moving Muscles Scholarships will be awarded in each of the following regions: British Columbia; Alberta; and Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario. Each successful candidate will receive $5,000 from the Moving Muscles Scholarship fund, which will be awarded on scholastic achievement, basis of financial need and community involvement. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2012. The application form can be found on Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s website

Muscular dystrophy is the name given to a group of disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles that control body movement. Over time, persons with neuromuscular disorders may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. For some individuals, the disorder is fatal. There is currently no cure.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s mission is to enhance the lives of those affected with neuromuscular disorders by continually working to provide ongoing support and resources while relentlessly searching for a cure through well funded research

A Chance to See Disabilities as Assets

If more of us can see disability as both a challenge and an asset, the nation will be well on the way to fully using the job skills of all of it's citizens.

Many people know of Berkeley California as the birthplace, in the 1960's of
the free speech movement. Fewer people know that Berkeley also played a major
role in teh disability rights movement. It was here, also in the 1960's, that
Ed Roberts - a studnet with quadriplegia - became an outspoken advocate of the
cause.

CCRW Youth Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities 2012

For the academic year beginning September 2012, the CCRW will be awarding
eight (8) scholarships. Each scholarship will be in the amount of $2,500.

Conditions and eligibility requirements are listed below.

The deadline for application submission is Friday, April 20, 2012

To be considered, scholarship applicants must:

- Be a person with a long-term and reoccurring disability that restricts
the ability of a person to perform the activities necessary to participate
in educational activities. This limitation is expected to remain with the
person for life.

- Be a high school student entering the first year of studies in a Canadian
post-secondary institution that is recognized by the Association of Universities
and Colleges of Canada at the undergraduate level.

- Be a full-time student (vs part-time).

- Not be involved in the selection process or be a close family member of any
scholarship selection committee member.

- Not have been awarded one of these CCRW Scholarships in the past. Scholarships
are not renewable, one time payment only.

Conference for students with neuromuscular disorders

Muscular Dystrophy Canada and Safeway bring you Youth in Action 2012 conference

You’ll spend an action-packed weekend in Calgary with youth and families affected by neuromuscular disorders, participating in interactive workshops, hearing from inspirational speakers, and enjoying social evenings with lots of great entertainment.

You’ll explore options, hear about new opportunities, receive advice from people who know what it’s like to be where you are, and get motivated to advocate for changes that will improve the lives of people with muscular dystrophy. You will also have the opportunity to tell Muscular Dystrophy Canada Board members and staff about what matters to you and how we can help you achieve your dreams.

Case manager Temporary Full Time until September 2012
As part of the Case Management team, the major responsibility for this position is to act as the primary contact person for claims from injured workers with overall responsibility for the explanation and communication of information internally and externally.
Qualifications include a degree in business, health care, education, social sciences or disability management plus one year case management experience or a two year diploma in one of the aforementioned disciplines plus four years case management experience. Case management is defined as responsibility for an assigned client caseload and accountability for all decisions and actions that impact individual clients.
