The U of S strives to ensure the health and safety of all members of the University community. In response to growing health concerns, Workplace Safety & Environmental Protection (WSEP) has embarked on a Scent and Odour Awareness Program at the U of S. which strives to minimize the negative effects to individuals from exposure to perfumes, scents and other odours within our facilities. All members of the University community share the responsibility for promoting a healthy environment.
There is a growing understanding and concern that many people are affected by exposure to scented products and other odours.
In cases where scented products have been blamed for adversely affecting health, symptoms can include:
headaches, migraines
dizziness, lightheadedness
nausea, diarrhea, constipation
weakness, fatigue
insomnia breathing problems
shortness of breath
skin irritations
inability to concentrate
irritability, depression, mood swings
There are many people on campus who are bothered by scents, and who would very much appreciate other people restraining their application of scented products.
The use of non scented products is strongly encouraged. If a scented product is used be courteous and respectful in your use of the product. Remember that many people use the locker rooms and washrooms, and the smell of the hair spray, perfume, aftershave or other product may linger longer than you realize!
You may identify individuals whose use of scent may be inappropriate and ask them respectfully to modify their use. Don’t underestimate the willingness of people to cooperate with restrictions on scented product use.
