We hope everyone has enjoyed summer; we can't believe it's over!
It was great to be able to meet some of the new teacher candidates over summer, and we're glad to hear that some of you are interested in joining council! We're still looking for one more President's Liaison so let us know if you are interested!

We're really looking forward to meeting the new teacher candidates at Orientation on Thursday and Friday. Come find out about the ESS, ask us any questions you might have, buy a membership ($15), and have a snack with us! We're here to help make your Education experience the best it can be!
For that reason, we're also really hoping you can make it The Sutherland Friday night (Sept. 2) for some free food, beverages, and beach volleyball! It's sure to be a great time, as well as a good opportunity to meet fellow teacher candidates!

You may have noticed that we've done a bit of updating to the website. Our new executive photo is now on the main page (and for the record, the lovely lady on the far left is actually quite fun, despite the impression the photo may give). More importantly, our new EVENT CALENDAR has been posted! We've got tons of informative (and important) PDs and great social activities planned for everyone this year! The calendar has been updated since its original posting so be sure you have the updated version downloaded!
You should also come join our Facebook page to stay up to date on all the happenings with the ESS (and Education in general)!

Thanks for checking in! We've got some exciting news to share soon so be sure to check back!
Remember to email contact.ess@usask.ca if you have any questions!

Good luck to all the TCs starting classes on Tuesday and to those that are already busy with their internships!

We hope everyone is enjoying the weather and opportunities that summer brings! To all of you anxiously waiting to hear the results of your Education applications and interviews, we wish you the best of luck!

The E.S.S. is already busy planning for the upcoming school year, which includes adding two President's Liaisons to the Executive Council. If you are a new or returning student (not on internship), you should consider applying!

The President Liaisons must:
1. Represent the President’s views, and act on their behalf in their absence.
2. Be the voice of all pre-intern education students at executive meetings.
3. Take on tasks as deemed necessary.
4. Management of ESS office procedures and organization of ESS office space.
5. Attend committee meetings throughout the year as deemed necessary by the President and Executive.

This may seem like a daunting task, but I assure you that being part of the E.S.S. is an incredibly fun and rewarding experience and we will be sure to train the successful applicants before school begins!

If you are interested in applying for this position, please write a 200 word platform and email it to Angela Schindelka by July 15 if possible! The annual E.S.S. Executive Retreat is August 5-7, 2011 and we want you to join us in the planning and teambuilding!
We look forward to hearing from you!

Sometimes the standards of conduct between students and teachers are ambiguous. Teachers place themselves and their students in jeopardy when boundaries are crossed. This workshop helps teacher candidates identify boundaries and provides them with support and resources. Reference will be made to the STF Code of Ethics.

CPR and First Aid are a life skill that will look fantastic in your portfolio and on your resume. CPR-C gives you the following training: adult rescuer, child & infant CPR & 2-man rescuer and AED. Many jobs working with children require this certification, so get it early. Build this life skill that could benefit others as well as yourself.

Date: March 30, 2011
Time: 4:30 to 6:30
Cost per Participant: $4 for members / $6 for non-members

First Nations cultures and traditions are diverse in Saskatchewan. Understanding and informing the "new" teacher is as important as learning any other culture in the world. The Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Center released a book in 2009 called “Cultural Teachings: First Nations Protocols and Methodologies”. This book provides a guide to appropriate traditional etiquette for individuals attending ceremonial activities of First Nations people in Saskatchewan. It will also answer general questions about the appropriate dress for attending ceremonies for men and women, appropriate dress for attending sweatlodge ceremonies and what is expected for each person who attends feasts. Cultural Teachings speaks to how culture impacts the different communities and how recognizing and respecting these differences can play a role in the teaching of a First Nations child.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is coming up on Monday, Jan 31st, 2011 at 4:00 pm in Rm 2060. All Education students are welcome to attend and all ESS members are eligible to vote. All motions, amendments, or changes to the agenda must be submitted in writing to Alysha (alb652@mail.usask.ca) or Rylan (rrg501@mail.usask.ca) no later than two full days before. Pizza and pop will also be available.

ESS Executive Council nominations will be accepted January 31st-February 8th, 2011. Nomination forms are available in the ESS office (1009) and campaigning regulations and position details are available in the ESS Constitution.

Planning has begun for the 2011 Education Graduation Banquet!
Grad Student Nomination forms (Valedictorian, MC, etc) are available in the ESS office and are due February 3rd, 2011. Suggestions for Keynote Speaker can be forwarded to Chantal (cdo263@mail.usask.ca).
Grad Award Nominations forms (Instructor of the Year, Co-operating Teacher of the year, etc) are also available in the ESS office and are due March 2nd, 2011.

There is still plenty of room for volunteers on the Grad Committee; those who aren’t graduating this spring are particularly encouraged to volunteer, as they are essential to the successful execution of the big day. It’s an excellent opportunity to see how grad works and what you might want to do the same or differently when it’s your turn.

Two grad fundraisers are currently planned; there will be a Steak Night March 4th at Mulberry’s and a Bake Sale on Feb 14th in the Education Building. More details to come.
