September Plans!

With September quickly approaching, we figured it's about time we update everyone on our progress! We have lots of really cool professional development opportunities and social events planned for the coming year. More details on those will be available soon; check back for a detailed event calendar (which you should be able to synch to your device)!

The year's events will begin with the Orientation for the new teacher candidates on September 1st and 2nd. The ESS will be in the student lounge during the Orientation breaks (Thurs 2:00pm-2:15pm, Friday 10:15am-10:30am and 2:15pm-2:30pm) serving up tasty snacks and refreshments. We'd love to meet as many of you as possible and talk with you about Education and all of the awesome things the E.S.S. has to offer!

To top it all off, we are also having a "Welcome BBQ & Social" at The Sutherland on Friday September 2, starting at 7:00pm! Come join us for a burger and beverages/tokens, as well as beach volleyball - all for FREE! It's a great way to get to know your fellow teacher candidates and celebrate your entry in the college!
(We assure those of you who are under 19 or aren't interested in events like this, that there will be other kinds of awesome events throughout the year as well!)

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer vacation! Best of luck in classes, student teaching, internship, etc.! Don't hesitate to stop by the ESS office (EDUC 1009) if there's anything we can do to help you!

All motions, amendments, or changes to the agenda must be submitted in writing to Alysha (alb652@mail.usask.ca) or Rylan (rrg501@mail.usask.ca) no later than two full days before. Pizza and pop will also be available.

ESS Executive Council nominations will be accepted January 31st-February 8th, 2011. Nomination forms are available in the ESS office (1009) and campaigning regulations and position details are available in the ESS Constitution.

Planning has begun for the 2011 Education Graduation Banquet!
Grad Student Nomination forms (Valedictorian, MC, etc) are available in the ESS office and are due February 3rd, 2011. Suggestions for Keynote Speaker can be forwarded to Chantal (cdo263@mail.usask.ca).
Grad Award Nominations forms (Instructor of the Year, Co-operating Teacher of the year, etc) are also available in the ESS office and are due March 2nd, 2011.

There is still plenty of room for volunteers on the Grad Committee; those who aren’t graduating this spring are particularly encouraged to volunteer, as they are essential to the successful execution of the big day. It’s an excellent opportunity to see how grad works and what you might want to do the same or differently when it’s your turn.

Two grad fundraisers are currently planned; there will be a Steak Night March 4th at Mulberry’s and a Bake Sale on Feb 14th in the Education Building. More details to come.

Education Grad 2010, date, photos, grad committee

Hello everyone and welcome back to campus!

I hope your internship experience was as amazing as mine was, but it is time to start thinking about grad. Grad will be held on Friday March 12, 2010 at TCU Place. The evening will consist of cocktails, a banquet dinner, some speeches (valedictorian, toast to the parents etc.) and some dancing. This is different than convocation which will be held in June where we get our degrees. This is just for education students and their families/guests.

There will be grad photos starting Monday January 18 and will be running for 2 weeks. The photographer has been booked to come to the education building so there will be no travel/time expense for you. There will be sign up sheets and information outisde the ESS office in early January.

We will need a grad committee come early January. This will consist of first and second year education students. Most of the work is done, we will just need to help with decorations, creating a program, some fundraising, etc. This is a really fun and important committee and I would really like some help. Let's make our grad a great one.

If you would like any additional information please do not hesitate to contact me at kjo451@mail.usask.ca

I hope you had a great holiday, let's finish up this last term then we're done!!

Teachers Without Borders Looking for New Members/Volunteers

On September 15, 2009, join Teachers Without Borders - University of Saskatchewan (TWB - U of S) by "Coming Together for Education." University students will help by pushing two giant pieces of the “education puzzle” across the University of Saskatchewan campus. These pieces will be 200 feet apart, and we are inviting you to push and help us bring them together. Small donations will be accepted. Proceeds raised at the event are being used to improve educational programming for students in Saskatoon and area schools.

TWB - U of S works in the Saskatoon region to bring communities together to improve the educational opportunities for students. In turn, the symbolic “coming together” of the TWB sign at the U of S represents Saskatoon citizens coming together for the students in their area.

Please email twb.uofs@gmail.com or call 220-9616 if you are interested in taking your participation one step further by volunteering with us between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm on September 15th - This is a great opportunity to add some volunteering to your resume or portfolio as well as network with professors and students in the college!

We are holding an info session for those interested, September 9 at 6:00pm in the Education Student Lounge.
