STF President Hopeful Programs Won't Be Sacrificed After Modest Increase

(The following is an excerpt from an STF News Release from Wed., March 24, 2010)

The STF has released new information regarding the 2010-11 provincial budget as it relates to the teaching profession. The PreK-12 education sector has received a modest $18.6 million (1.16 %) increase for the upcoming school year. This amount; as announced by Minister of Education, Ken Krawetz, pales in comparision to the $241 million increase in the budget just one year ago.

According to STF President, Dianne Woloschuk, the slight increase was appreciated but is unlikely to be sufficient to cover the actual costs of the vast range of educative programs now offered in Saskatchewan's school divisions. "Education is a human endeavor and it is important for the holistic learning needs of students that the education systen is adequately funded and resourced in order for Saskatchewan to maintain a sustainable, high quality public education system. We were glad to hear the Minister emphasize that education is a priority, and we agree it is an investment in the future of our children and the future of our province." Woloschuk shared with Krawetz the thought that there is still a substantial backlog as well as emerging needs.

Future Elementary Teachers! Volunteer Hours: Heritage Fair

Hello Ed Students! I hope all of you will consider volunteering your precious time to assist with the Regional Heritage Fair in Saskatoon on Thursday May 6th!

What is a Heritage Fair you ask? This event is like a Science fair but for Social Studies.... it fits in perfectly with the curriculum. Students from grade 4-8 have been working hard on their presentations that deal with anything having to do with Canadian heritage. Anything at all that is of interest to them! You will see some pretty creative products with costumes, audio-visual aspects, original artifacts and more. The Regional Fair will be held at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon and the event is shaping up nicely.
At the moment, our committee is short on judges and we would love to have some ed students come out and support this event.... and its good assessment practice! A rubric has already been made up for you so you will know exactly what you are looking for. You will be required to attend a short session on May 6th to introduce you to the rubric . Then you will be assigned to a handful of students who will give you their presentation. You will then ask some interview type questions and assess their presentations.
The fair is being held into the weekend of May 6th but you will only be required to attend one evening for judging. It might be nice if you could be flexible and possibly come on Friday or Saturday. Either way, your help is needed!

Please contact: Lisa Bryden (STF rep) at lkb097@mail.usask.ca expressing your interest and your contact information (phone number and e-mail) so that I can finalize the dates with you.
Thank you for your consideration!

Education Grad 2010, date, photos, grad committee

Hello everyone and welcome back to campus!

I hope your internship experience was as amazing as mine was, but it is time to start thinking about grad. Grad will be held on Friday March 12, 2010 at TCU Place. The evening will consist of cocktails, a banquet dinner, some speeches (valedictorian, toast to the parents etc.) and some dancing. This is different than convocation which will be held in June where we get our degrees. This is just for education students and their families/guests.

There will be grad photos starting Monday January 18 and will be running for 2 weeks. The photographer has been booked to come to the education building so there will be no travel/time expense for you. There will be sign up sheets and information outisde the ESS office in early January.

We will need a grad committee come early January. This will consist of first and second year education students. Most of the work is done, we will just need to help with decorations, creating a program, some fundraising, etc. This is a really fun and important committee and I would really like some help. Let's make our grad a great one.

If you would like any additional information please do not hesitate to contact me at kjo451@mail.usask.ca

I hope you had a great holiday, let's finish up this last term then we're done!!

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement Volunteer Opportunities

Build your resume, improve your public speaking and presentation skills, inspire the next generation of community leaders, and have fun! Junior Achievement is looking for volunteers to deliver in-school programs to students in grades 5-8. Programs are well designed and easy to facilitate, and volunteers are trained by JA. All program materials are provided. Each program is approximately 3-4 hours in duration and is usually completed over a single 3hr. session, or two visits to the classroom. Volunteers and teachers coordinate times and dates for program delivery to ensure flexibility with both parties’ schedules.

Volunteer training takes approximately 1 hour, and we would ask our volunteers to commit to delivery in at least one classroom. If requested, a volunteer can be paired with an experienced presenter. The total time commitment to the program can be as little as 4-5 hours, or as many as a volunteer wishes. Our most popular programs are:

"Business Basics" (gr.5&6) is a fun and interactive program designed to provide elementary students with a practical understanding of the organization and operation of business within a free-enterprise system. Students learn about business plans, management decisions, and different ways in which products are produced and marketed.

"Dollars with Sense" (gr.7&8) is designed to encourage students to develop the financial literacy skills necessary to make informed decisions about their financial futures. Students learn about budgeting, money management, and investments.

There are also programs available for grades 3-4 students, but there are limited opportunities
for presentation at these grade levels.

For more information on how to get involved, please contact :
