Concerns Raised About the Alton Project and the Shubenacadie River

Rachel Mendleson of the hfxnews.ca (Halifax news) reports on a project that involves hollowing out salt caverns, which will be used to store natural gas, may dump about 100 loads of salt into the river for 12 to 16 months.

Ontario to Return Ipperwash

Anthony Reinhart of the National reports that the Ipperwash site on the shores of Lake Huron will be co-managed by Kettle and Stony Point First Nation and the Province of Ontario.

Marsha Lederman of The Globe and Mail reports that a two million dollar donation by Vancouver philanthropist Michael Audain is to endow an Indigenous Art Curatorial Chair at the National Gallery of Canada. As Michael Audain would like to see Aboriginal art in mainstream settings.

The National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation announced their award winners in various categories. University of Saskatchewan's faculty member Dr. Marie Ann Battiste received the award under the category Education.

Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI)

The University of Alberta is pleased to present the ninth annual Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI) 2008. This program provides a unique opportunity to earn university credit while learning about selected Canadian Indigenous languages and cultures. Participants include undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning an Indigenous language or gaining expertise in the areas of linguistics, language and literacy, curriculum development, second language teaching and research.

In addressing issues of Indigenous language loss in Canada, CILLDI has been expanding to include a wide range of courses based on needs expressed in Indigenous communities.

Winnipeg Community Statistically Examined

CBC news reported that the The International Institute for Sustainable Development wants to understand how the average person who has lived on a reserve experiences life in Winnipeg. There is now a study entitled, Community Indicators Systems for Winnipeg's Urban First Nations that looks at the effective use of sustainability indicators in decision-making.

Canada Has Settled a Land Claim with Metepenagiag Mikmaq Nation

CBC news reports that the Federal Government will give the Metepenagiag Mi'kmaq Nation in New Brunswick about $1.4 million to compensate for about 66 hectares of land taken in the early 1900s.
