Government Of Canada Reintroduces Legislation To Allow First Nations to Develop Commercial Real Estate On Reserves

The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today reintroduced legislation to facilitate the development of major commercial real estate on reserve land when requested by the band.
The First Nations Certainty of Land Title Act would amend the First Nations Commercial and Industrial Development Act to permit the registration of on-reserve commercial real estate developments in a system that replicates the provincial land titles or registry system.The Squamish Nation in British Columbia is a major proponent of the new bill. The First Nation is currently developing a proposal for new condominiums to be located on reserve land in West Vancouver.
