Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week

Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week will launch on December 1st, 2011 in Ottawa, Ontario. There will also be workshops held across the country to further discuss Aboriginal HIV and AIDS issues December 2nd-5th, 2011.

Federation of Saskatchewan Indians Nations Welcomes Accountablity

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) welcomes the interest in accountability and transparency. Saskatoon Rosetown Biggar Member of Parliament Kelly Block sparked the renewed interest in the topic by introducing a private members bill similar to the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. The FSIN has invited Kelly Block and other Saskatchewan MPs to attend the FSIN Winter Legislative Assembly to learn more about the challenges facing First Nation people.

AFN National Chief Welcomes First Nations Housing Commitment

Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), has welcomed the opportunity to partner with the National Leadership Council for Habitat for Humanity Canada. The Council advocates for the creation of secure, adequate and reasonably priced housing across all of Canada.

Labrador Innu Agree To Land Deal

CBC News posted on November 18th, 2011 that Labrador Innu leaders, along with Newfoundland Premier Kathy Dunderdale, recently signed the New Dawn agreement in the northern community of Natuashish. The deal corrects previous wrongs with the Upper Churchill hydroelectric project, built in the 1960's, and paves the way for a second phase in which the Innu will receive 5% of the Muskrat Falls profits.

Aboriginal Affairs Coalition of Saskatchewan to Host Exploratory Process Dialogue Session

The Aboriginal Students' Centre, at the University of Saskatchewan, is the location chosen by the Aboriginal Affairs Coalition of Saskatchewan (AACS) to host an Exploratory Process Dialogue Session on November 29th, 2011 from 1:00 - 3:00PM. Issues open for discussion include, but are not limited to: Indian registration, Band membership, Aboriginal citizenship, etc.

First Nations Youth Occupy Two Different Worlds

Monday, November 21st, 2011 Gloria Galloway, from the Globe and Mail, reports that a panel formed by the Federal Government and the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) one year ago, to study First Nations learning, has been told that children from reserves aren't ready to sacrifice reserve life for their education. The panel held its final round table on Tuesday, November 22nd, in Ottawa.

Pictorial Histories of Indian Residential Schools in Saskatchewan

The University of Saskatchewan is offering in 2011-2012, Term 2, Native Studies 430.3 Pictorial Histories of Indian Residential Schools in Saskatchewan. This class will inform students about the residential school experience in Saskatchewan from the perspective of policy makers, who ran and worked in the schools, and the survivors. The class takes place Tuesdays from 9:00AM-11:50AM. Please note that there will be a Truth and Reconciliation Commission Saskatchewan National Event taking place in Saskatoon in June 2012.

The Need For Innovation in Aboriginal Youth Health Lecture

The Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School (JSGS) of Public Policy is presenting the JSGS/SWRTC Lecture - Rehearsing for Reality: The Need for Innovation in Aboriginal Youth Health. This lecture will take place on Friday, December 2nd, 2011 from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm at the JS Window Room, 2nd Floor Gallery Building, College Avenue, at the University of Regina campus and will be video-conferenced at the Prairie Room, Diefenbaker Building, 101 Diefenbaker Place, at the University of Saskatchewan campus.

University of Saskatchewan Establishes Office of Aboriginal Engagement

On Campus News (ocn) on November 18th, 2011 (Volume 19, Issue 7) reports that as part of the Academic Innovation Initiatives, recently announced by the University of Saskatchewan's Provost Committee on Integrated Planning (PCIP), the new Office of Aboriginal Engagement was set-up to make it easier for faculty to connect with communities and vice versa. Candace Wasacase-Lafferty, who was named the director of the Office of Aboriginal Engagement at English River, is "excited" and sees the move as an "important bridge between First Nations and Métis communities and the U of S".

First Nations Pavilion Opens At Regina Agribition

Lisa Goudy, in the November 23rd, 2011 Regina Leader-Post, reports on a brand new First Nations pavilion celebration held yesterday at Regina's Agribition. The pavilion, located in Arena 3 of the Co-operators Centre at Evraz Place is featuring storytelling by First Nations elders, a tipi and artifacts on display, plus traditional crafts and a language booth. Currently the pavilion covers one quarter of a hockey rink and by 2012 it is planned to be as large as a full-scale hockey arena.

Assembly of First Nations Welcomes Clean Water Proposals

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn Atleo stated on November 18th, 2011 that he welcomes the Government of Canada's announcement to improve drinking water quality in Manitoba. On November 17th, 2011 Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister John Duncan committed $5.5 million to improve on the infrastructure of Island Lake First Nation communities in Manitoba.

The 2011 Manitoba Aboriginal Youth Achievement Awards will be taking place on Thursday, November 24th, 2011 at 5:30 P.M. at the Victoria Inn, 1808 Wellington Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Porcupine Plain Resident Receives Fishing Restrictions

November 15, 2011 Gerald Campeau was found guilty for possession of fish, taken contrary to The Saskatchewan Fisheries Regulations Act. In addition to the $2,540 fine, Campeau received a two year probation order which includes reporting any fishing activity, including that conducted under his Treaty rights, to the Ministry of Environment and is prohibited from having a fishing license for four years.

City of Regina Raises a Metis Flag

On Tuesday, November 15th, 2011, one day before the anniversary of Louis Riel's death, the City of Regina, Saskatchewan, raised a Métis flag at City Hall. The flag will be a permanent addition and Robert Doucette, president of the Saskatchewan Métis Nation, called the occasion "meaningful."

Assembly of First Nations Chief Praises UN Declaration

Gloria Galloway, from the Globe and Mail, posted on Friday, November 11th, 2011 that the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), Shawn Atleo, says that in the year that has passed since the signing of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by Canada, there has been a beginning of some form of reconciliation between his people and Canada.

The 10th annual Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival (WAFF) is taking place November 16th-20th, 2011. The WAFF is the 3rd largest film festival of its kind in North America and it's mandate is to celebrate and cultivate Indigenous storytelling.

Aboriginal Education Key To Saskatchewan Success

On November 9th, 2011 CBC posted that a recent report states that Saskatchewan could be even more prosperous than now, if the Aboriginal segment of the population had better educational outcomes. University of Saskatchewan professor Eric Howe, who wrote the report, Bridging the Gap said that increasing Aboriginal education would create a potential 90 billion dollar boom.

Tomson Highway Thrilled With Rez Sisters Revival

J. Kelly Nestruck reports in the Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 Globe and Mail that playwright Tomson Highway is, "absolutely thrilled" over Ken Gass's revival of The Rez Sisters at Factory Theatre in Toronto, Ontario. Canadian theatre still wrestles with political correctness and so the application of a culturally diverse cast to a culturally specific play is somewhat of a departure for Canadian theatre.

Calvin Helin, author of the book The Economic Dependency Trap has been nominated for a prestigious American book award. The 8th Annual USA "Best Books" awards honours books in several catagories. Helin's book was recognized as a finalist in the Self-Help: General category.
