The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Executive Communique of January 27th, 2012 reports on the new Band Teacher Salary Funding agreement in reaction to the recently announced provincial teacher salary increases. Also, there's reports on an upcoming Matrimonial Real Property Gathering and a Post Secondary Education Rally in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Chief Darcy Bear, of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, recently signed a Framework Agreement with The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, to negotiate self-government of the First Nation. The process will encourage self-reliant and accountable First Nation government and will include mechanisms to create better inter-government relations.
The Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre (SICC) is celebrating February 2012 as Aboriginal Storytelling Month. The SICC will be holding storytelling events on February 15th and February 29th at the White Buffalo Lodge, located at 602-20th St. W., Saskatoon, SK.
The Kawacatoose First Nation, after being approached by 14 different companies in the past few years according to their Chief, Darin Poorman, has formed a joint venture with Native American Resource Partners. Native American Resource Partners is a private equity firm with more than $5.7 billion in assets under management. It has offices in Calgary, Saskatoon and Salt Lake City.

The growing number of successful urban reserves throughout Saskatchewan has transformed opposition into quiet acceptance. The recent opening of the Cree Way Gas West on 22nd St. in Saskatoon has highlighted that these businesses make the same payments to municipalities and school boards as other businesses do through service agreements. These agreements require payments to be made that are equal to the taxes that would have been paid on the land, therefore making it a revenue neutral proposition.

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) has named Aboriginal boxer, Mary Spencer, of Wiarton, Ontario to it's list of Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity for 2011. Also included is federal Health Minister, Leona Aglukkaq, who is from Nunavut.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and First Nations leaders are holding a summit, the result of years of preparatory meetings. While First Nations leaders are hoping to achieve a definite, timetable for specific improvements to their communities, Harper is said to favour a gradual, incremental approach.
After more than 10 years of lobbying, Air Greenland is resuming the Iqaluit to Nuuk, Greenland route. The trial run will start June 18th, 2012 with twice weekly flights on Mondays and Fridays until September 3rd, 2012 which could be extended, depending on demand.

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) most recent communique reports on developments regarding post-secondary education, the Canada/First Nations gathering coming up on January 24th, 2012 and other current issues.
Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief, Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, recently stated the pressing need for the construction of all-weather roads to link remote First Nations communities. With recent warm winter weather becoming more common across Canada the 'window' of availability for various ice roads has become much smaller.
Hearings were held earlier this week at the First Nations University of Canada (FNUC) in Regina, Saskatchewan where residential school survivors related their experiences to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Additional hearings will be held in 11 other communities in Saskatchewan leading up to the third national event which will be held in Saskatoon on June 21st-24th, 2012.

National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), Shawn Atleo, remains confident that a January 24th, 2012 meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper can achieve progress in resolving some of the problems plaguing Canada's aboriginal communities.
Topics to be covered include land claims, education, health, economic development, revenue sharing, housing, and strengthening relationships.
The Government of Canada is investing approximately $700,000 in the Miawpukek First Nation of Newfoundland for water infrastructure improvements and emergency management measures. The Miawpukek First Nation was established as a reserve in 1987 and has 2,780 members with an on-reserve population of about 830 residents.

The screening of the film "Finding Dawn", directed by Christine Welsh, will take place at the Neatby-Timlin Theatre, Arts 241, University of Saskatchewan on Thursday, January 19th at 7:15PM. The documentary, which focuses on the lives of missing Aboriginal women in Canada, is part of the National Film Board's series NATIVE: Through the Eyes of Indigenous Women. A panel discussion will follow the screening.
The screening is part of a "Lights-Camera-Action" initiative by the Community Service-Learning Office, University Learning Centre (ULC).
The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) is hosting the 14th Annual Toronto Gala on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 at the Four Seasons in Toronto, Ontario. The Master of Ceremonies is CBC's Amanda Lang and the Keynote Address is being delivered by former Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Jim Prentice.

The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario based organization, Learning Together Incorporated is hosting the 7th Annual Aboriginal Mining Conference, which will be taking place in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories on March 29th & 30th, 2012. The organization's goals are to ensure that all communities can access information to ensure best practices.
Figures released by the Government of Saskatchewan show that off-reserve Aboriginal employment in Saskatchewan increased by 5,000 jobs for the seventh consecutive month of gains year-over-year, an increase of 14%. Aboriginal youth employment also increased by 4.7%.
The Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of Canada is offering a 2 day workshop for First Nation Financial Managers, Band Administrators and other Elected Leaders. The workshop is being held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on February 13th & 14th, 2012 at TCU Place. Registration deadline is January 12th, 2012.
First Nations students at the First Nations University of Canada (FNUC) and the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) are now participating in the universal or U-Pass according to a CBC report. Saskatoon Transit is hopeful that ridership will increase as a result of the initiative.

The residents of the Samson Cree Nation in Alberta have voted in a recent referendum to allow a process to take place that would lead to the eviction from the reserve of individuals deemed to be presenting a danger to the health or safety of the community.

The Flying Dust First Nation, located near Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan recently opened it's new arena which had been 10 years in the making and took 20 months to build, at a cost of $5 million. Chief Jim Norman said that the facility, which will operate year round, will benefit more people than the residents of Flying Dust.

Among them, board of directors expenses that were 5 times the amount paid by the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation which oversees the provincial casinos in Regina and Moose Jaw and the ousting of the board chair, Kirk Goodtrack.

Last week, the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal certified the class-action lawsuit filed by thousands of aboriginal people who allege they were excluded from a recent federal compensation settlement. Officials estimate that there could be as many as 6,000 people covered by the lawsuit, most of them residents of the northern Labrador Inuit Nunatsiavut government.
