Red Road: The Barry Hambly Story

"Red Road" is a one hour documentary about Barry (Whitecap) Hambly who was born on Carry The Kettle First Nation in Saskatchewan. Barry was a victim of the "Sixties Scoop" which saw thousands of Aboriginal children removed from their birth parents and adopted into non-Aboriginal families.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), in partnership with W. Brett Wilson, Canoe Financial and the Wilson Centre for Excellence at the University of Saskatchewan, is hosting The Boom Box. The top five applicants will be selected to present their concepts inside The Boom Box in Saskatoon on April 12, 2012.

Saskatchewan Government/FSIN Education and Employment Joint Task Force Created

On Monday March 26th, 2012, Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris announced the participants who will comprise the Joint Task Force on Improving Education and Employment Outcomes for First Nations and Métis. The Task Force gets down to work in early spring 2012 with the completed report expected to be available in early 2013.

Discussion on First Nation Governance Issues

Prairie Region Forum will be presenting "Creating a New Memory in the Minds of Our Children: A Dialogue on First Nation Governance Issues", Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 8:30-4:30 p.m. at Evraz Place, Queensbury Convention Centre, Regina, Saskatchewan. Chief Todd Peigan, Herb George Satsan, and Professor Leroy Little Bear will be the speakers on issues related to restoring a culturally appropriate governance structure for First Nation communities.

Aboriginal Achievement Week - March 19-23, 2012

The Aboriginal Students Centre (ASC) at the University of Saskatchewan will be hosting Aboriginal Achievement Week between March 19th-23th, 2012, to highlight aboriginal culture in research and academia on campus. Two events that will be take place on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 are: "Pizza Lunch" from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm; Room 248, Arts Building hosted by the Aboriginal Student Achievement Office; College of Arts and Science and "Guest Speaker" Commissioner Chief Wilton Littlechild from 2:30 to 3:30 pm; Room 105, Thorvaldson Building hosted by the Department of Native Studies.

First Nations Continue Call For Comparable Education Funding

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) is pleased that both Premier Brad Wall and Education Minister Donna Harpauer publicly support comparable funding for First Nations schools as a key factor in the improvement of education on reserves.

Pre-treaty Signing Date Set for Komoks First Nation

K'ómoks First Nation is that much closer to a permanent treaty settlement. On Saturday, March 24th a formal signing ceremony will be held at the Band Hall on Comox Road, Comox, B.C. K'ómoks Chief Ernie Hardy says it is a major step towards a final treaty.

Contract Awarded For New Attawapiskat First Nation School

The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced on March 6th, 2012 that the Attawapiskat First Nation has awarded the construction contract to build its new school. The contractor, Penn-Co Construction Canada has extensive experience working with remote First Nations communities on the construction of large facilities.

The Saskatchewan Federation of Indian Nations (FSIN) is hosting the 2012 FSIN Provincial Hockey Championships which will take place April 20th, 21st, & 22nd, 2012 in Saskatoon, SK. All games will take place at Jemini Arenas. Entry deadline is April 13, 2012.

Large Funding Gap Between Reserve and Non-Reserve Schools

According to The Globe and Mail a funding gap of approximately 20% exists between reserve and non-reserve schools. The article, which studied two Saskatchewan schools, stated, "One province, two school experiences" citing differences in funding per pupil, graduation rates and facilities.

Spanish / Indigenous Film Screening

The University of Saskatchewan's Division of Humanities and Fine Arts, Dept. of Languages and Linguistics, Women's and Gender Studies, and the University Library are sponsoring, Even The Rain, a story of Bolivian people protesting water privatization. The presentation takes place Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Broadway Theatre, Saskatoon. Doors open at 6:30, screening at 7:00 with a panel discussion to follow at 9:00. Free admission.

Assembly of First Nations National Water Conference

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is hosting a National Water Conference which will be held March 5th-7th, 2012 at the Marriott Edmonton, at River Cree Resort in Edmonton, Alberta. The conference will concentrate on First Nation water rights and how to achieve the technical goal of obtaining safe drinking water for First Nations communities.

Government of Canada Introduces Safe Drinking Water for First Nations Act

On February 29th, 2012, The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced the introduction of the Safe Drinking Water for First Nations Act aimed at helping to protect drinking water on First Nation lands. The Act will ensure that drinking water and wastewater standards on First Nations lands are comparable to the standards enjoyed by all Canadians.
