2013 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships Tryouts

The Team Saskatchewan identification camps will be held on February 9th, 2013 at the Beardy's Arena, Beardy's & Okemasis First Nation with registration starting at 9:00 am for males and 10:00 am for females. These camps will select the teams that will compete in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship which will be held April 29th - May 4th, 2013 in Kahnawake, Quebec.

International Aid Agencies Assist Thunder Bay Aboriginal Trade School

Two international aid groups, HopeLink International and Schools for Children of the World (SCW) Canada are getting involved with the creation of an Aboriginal trade school in Thunder Bay, Ontario. With federal funding for First Nations education capped, the two groups whose focus is normally on Third World projects, felt compelled to act in an effort to reduce the rate of non-completion of Grade 12, currently estimated at 70%.

An online discussion was held from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax on December 12, 2011. The discussion offered Indigenous high school students from across Canada the opportunity to discuss their impressions of postsecondary education and their educational goals.

Dialogue Session Regarding Indian Registration, Band Membership and Aboriginal Citizenship

The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples and the Aboriginal Student Services Center at the University of Alberta is hosting an exploratory process to gather information and identify critical issues for discussion relating to Indian registration, Band membership and Aboriginal citizenship. The session is designed to shed light and encourage further discussion on many complex issues such as the current system of Indian registration in the Indian Act and Métis citizenship and identity.

The session will be held on Saturday, December 17th, 2011 at the U of A in the Lister Conference Center (Aurora Room), and will run from 9:45am - 3:00pm.

First Nations Pavilion Opens At Regina Agribition

Lisa Goudy, in the November 23rd, 2011 Regina Leader-Post, reports on a brand new First Nations pavilion celebration held yesterday at Regina's Agribition. The pavilion, located in Arena 3 of the Co-operators Centre at Evraz Place is featuring storytelling by First Nations elders, a tipi and artifacts on display, plus traditional crafts and a language booth. Currently the pavilion covers one quarter of a hockey rink and by 2012 it is planned to be as large as a full-scale hockey arena.

Kelly Nestruck reports in the Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 Globe and Mail that playwright Tomson Highway is, "absolutely thrilled" over Ken Gass's revival of The Rez Sisters at Factory Theatre in Toronto, Ontario. Canadian theatre still wrestles with political correctness and so the application of a culturally diverse cast to a culturally specific play is somewhat of a departure for Canadian theatre.

Indigenous Young Women: Speaking Our Truths, Building Our Strengths

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan will be the location of an event on November 18th-21st, 2011 where young Indigenous women from across Canada can learn, share and have fun with each other. The event will be sponsored by the Native Youth Sexual Health Network and Girls Action Foundation. Young indigenous women between the ages of 16 and 25 are invited to participate in the 4-day event where Elders and traditional leaders will be present to discuss leadership, empowerment, building solidarity and stopping violence.

Registration is free, and the deadline is September 9th, 2011.

Jeremy Morgan to Speak on Aboriginal Arts at the UofS

The University of Saskatchewan is pleased to have Jeremy Morgan speaking at a public lecture about support for Aboriginal Arts. Morgan will explore current policy approaches and possibilities for a new framework for the development of policies in the areas of Aboriginal arts and culture. Search Planned for Missing Muskowekwan First Nation Teen

Cody R. Wolfe, a grade 11 student from Wynyard Composite High School, was last seen on April 29, 2011 on the Muskowekwan First Nation, Lestock, Saskatchewan, when he left his grandmother's residence. So far searches, by RCMP and family/friends, and any clues that would lead to his whereabouts have come up empty. A search is being planned for this weekend May 28 & 29, 2011, and your help is needed. Searches and volunteers: meet at the Muskowekwan First Nation Band Hall, Lestock, SK at 8:30 am on Saturday and Sunday.

Metis Nation of Saskatchewan Presents a One-Day Workshop on The Historical Metis

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan presents a one-day workshop titled "The Historical Metis." It will be held March 12, 2011 at the Saskatoon Inn Hotel and Conference Centre, located at 2002 Airport Drive in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (just off Circle Drive), from 9:00am - 5:00pm, with registration starting at 8:00am. Guest speakers will discuss how the governments of Canada and the United States have addressed policy regarding Métis people and what types of genealogical records are needed to research lineage, which is a vital step in establishing the Métis Nation citizenry. Guest speakers will include Brenda Macdougall, Laura M. Hanowski, and Camie Augustus.

The event is free and open to the general public, although registration is required for the lunch.

Aboriginal Summer Science Program

The Institute for Aboriginal Health at UBC in partnership with the First Nations House of Learning is pleased to offer the 23rd year of the Summer Science Program, a one-week summer camp for First Nations students in grades 8-11, to help promote interest in the field of health and human service programs through first hand experience. Wilfrid Laurier University Office of Aboriginal Initiatives will be celebrating its annual Aboriginal Awareness Week at Laurier’s Waterloo Campus from March 7th to March 11th, 2011. Harmony Song, Tamaras House - Aboriginal Programs

A Traditional Story Telling event will be taking place Monday evenings at Tamara’s House, located at 1605 Victoria Avenue, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, starting at 6:00 p.m. and going until 7:30. This is an incredible opportunity to hear Aboriginal stories, traditions, knowledge and teachings.

Also A Women's Circle Ceremony will be held Thursday evenings in the Drop In Center at Tamara's House. Doors will be open at 6:30 pm and the ceremony will begin at 7pm, with an elder opening the event with a smudge ceremony and prayer.

There are limited funds for child care; therefore if you would like to secure your spot please contact Kelly in the Drop In at 683-8667 at least one day in advance.

Star Blanket Making will be held February 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th from 1 to 4 p.m. Each woman will learn to make a bag or baby blanket. It is an opportunity to learn to make the morning star symbol that has been honoured in native imagery for centuries. Star Blankets are given to honour friends and loved ones, deaths and births, and ceremonial occasions. Please call Kelly P. at 683-8667 to sign up.

135th Anniversary of Treaty 4 Celebrated by Piapot First Nation

The province of Saskatchewan, the city of Regina and the Piapot First Nation are celebrating the 135th Anniversary of Treaty 4. Celebrations began Wednesday, September 1st, on the reserve. Thursday, September 2nd, celebrations took place in the courtyard at Regina City Hall, with Gordon Barnhart (Saskatchewan's Lt.-Governor) unveiling a statue, performance by Buffy Sainte-Marie and the Canadian Forces jets doing a fly-by salute. Today, Friday September 3rd, the event concludes with the specially commissioned multimedia symphony Oscana at the Conexus Arts Centre at 7:00p.m. Tickets for the symphony Oscana are $51.50 for adults and $26.50 for students, seniors and children.

Back to Batoche a Huge Success

Over 75,000 people attended Back to Batoche from July 18th-25th, taking part in the celebration of Metis history, people, and heritage. With mostly everything going smoothly, the disappearance of a priceless artifact on the second last day of the celebrations was one of the only major problems at the event. Thankfully, the artifact was recovered the last day of the event.

Annual Urban Treaty Day Reminds People of Treaties

Urban Treaty Day was held Friday, June 18th in Saskatoon on the riverbank. The day was a celebration and reminder of First Nations culture and the treaties. All status First Nations people received the yearly $5.00 annuity payment, as guaranteed in the treaties. To many the day was more about education than money, a day for people to remember the history surrounding the signing of the Treaties.

Alianait Arts Festival - An Inuit Expression of Joy

The Aliant Arts Festival, which is in its sixth year, takes place over ten days from June 21 to July 1 in Iqaluitk, Nunavut. Alianait is an Inuit expression of joy and celebration and to celebrate the sixth annual festival, the theme for Alianait 2010 will be “Cultural Fusions”. The event will feature musicians, artists & performers from across Nunavut and around the world.

International Indigenous Leadership Gathering Examines Impact of Colonial History

People from all over the world came together on May 31st, at the Fountain Indian Reserve in British Columbia, for seven days to share in a celebration of indigenous wisdom and practice. This International Indigenous Leadership Gathering is the second of four such gatherings, with the final event due to take place in 2012. Speakers at the gathering shared stories of how colonialism has affected their lives and how “perseverance allowed them to hang on to their traditional teachings”.

Steak Night Fundraiser and Memorial Run for Daleen Kay Bosse (Muskego)

Daleen Kay Bosse (Muskego), a 25 year old Aboriginal mother, went missing in 2004. Her remains were found four years later near Saskatoon. The Missing Sisters Walk originated in 2005 and will continue in memory of Daleen and to raise awareness concerning violence against women and those women who remain missing.

The 2010 walk will take place in July, and the steak night will be held Friday June 18, 2010 from 6:00-8:30 at Mulberry's Bakery Cafe and Pub in Saskatoon.

The Nesika Cultural and Heritage Society would like to invite you to their inaugural heritage fundraising dinner on June 18, 2010 at the Museum of Vancouver, located at 1100 Chestnut Street (Vanier Park).

In addition to supporting their ongoing work with education and research, the Nesika Cultural and Heritage Society is holding the dinner to raise funds for a much-needed conference for First Nations communities on issues around heritage protection and preservation.

Aboriginal Animated Series Cancelled

Wapos Bay, a Saskatoon made stop-motion animation series, is filming its final season. The series follows the lives of three Cree youth in the fictional northern community of Wapos Bay. Dennis Jackson, the series creator, based the story on his own experiences in Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan.
An open house is being held Friday, May 14, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the studio located at 401 45th Street W., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At the open house, the public will have an opportunity to view the tiny plasticine characters and meet with the animators.

First Nations Artist Debuts Bison Exhibit

Adrian Stimson debuted his first solo exhibition, Beyond Redemption, at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon on the weekend of April 16th, 2010. The mixed media exhibition showcases a large stuffed bison surrounded by 10 buffalo-robed forms as well as paintings and a video mounted on the gallery's walls. Stimson notes that the bison provided his ancestors with food, clothing and other necessities and now is providing him with the same, although in a different way.

Aboriginal Emerging Writers Residencies Announced

The Canada Council for the Arts has announced two newly revitalized residencies for emerging Aboriginal writers. The two-week long residency programs are led by established Aboriginal writers and are designed to refresh and refine the writing skills of the successful applicants. Applications are now being accepted for the residencies, which will take place from September 13-25, 2010 in Banff and October 11-23, 2010 in Quebec City, until May 1, 2010.

Run, An Aboriginal Film Festival Award Winner, Screens April 14th to 17th at 7:00 p.m. in Saskatoon

The locally-produced movie, Run, opened April 14th, 2010 at the Roxy Theatre in Saskatoon and runs until Saturday April 17th. Run premiered at the Aboriginal Film Festival in Winnipeg and won a best new talent award for actor Joseph Naytowhow. The principal actors, Ariel Yurach and Joseph Naytowhow, will be at each screening and will be available for a question and answer period. Andrea Menard will be a special guest at the viewing Friday night.

Young Adult Book Drop on Tribal Lands

If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything, a U.S. National reading club for Native American children and young adults, introduces Operation Teen Book Drop 2010. Thousands of new books will be delivered to teens on reservation schools on April 15, 2010. The goals of this program include encouraging youth to read for pleasure, to promote library use and to help improve library collections.

Ostensible Benefits, Aboriginal People and Olympic Games Presentation

A presentation on Ostensible Benefits, Aboriginal People and Olympic Games: A Problematic Pairing for 2010 and Beyond will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, 10:30-12:00 at both the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina campuses. Janice Forsyth, Assistant Professor and Director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario, will be the presenter. The presentation will include discussion on Agenda 21, Sport for Sustainable Development, with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics serving as the primary example.

Back To Batoche Marks 125th Anniversary Of Northwest Resistance

The lineup for this year's Back To Batoche has been unveiled. The event is a week-long event that celebrates Métis history and pays homage to Métis leaders such as Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. Singer Michelle Wright will highlight this year's celebration along with other Canadian Métis performers such as Donny Parenteau, Andrea Menard and The Métis Fiddler Quartet.

Metis Teenage Film to Premiere in Saskatoon

"Run," a full length film written and directed by Saskatoon high school teacher Tom Simes, is premiering at the Roxy Theater in Saskatoon on April 14-17 @ 7p.m. The story is about a sixteen year old Metis teenager who spends a month of her summer holidays with her grandparents on the family farm.

Nominations for the SaskTel Aboriginal Youth Awards of Excellence are being accepted until April 16, 2010. The awards are open for Aboriginal youth between 13 and 19 years of age. Award categories include Outstanding Achievement (Male and Female), Leadership, Education, Community Service, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Fine Arts/Performing Arts, Technology/Science and Spirit.

Aboriginal, Rural, and Remote Health Group Presents: Unpacking the Backpack

The Aboriginal, Rural, and Remote Health Group (ARRHG) presents a monologue by Charlene Hellson titled, 'Unpacking the Backpack." The monologue was written for non-Aboriginal health care providers attending a conference on mental health and diversity, and is meant to educate people about the impact of colonization upon Aboriginals.

The event will take place March 16, 2010 at 7p.m. in the SaskTel Theatre at the Royal University Hospital.

The financial leaders from Canada, United States, Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Japan will gather on February 5-6 in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Hosted by Canada's Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, the G7 Finance Ministers meeting will be the first major event to be held in the Nunavut capital, which has a population of 6,200.
