Aboriginal, Rural, and Remote Health Group Presents: Unpacking the Backpack

The Aboriginal, Rural, and Remote Health Group (ARRHG) presents a monologue by Charlene Hellson titled, 'Unpacking the Backpack." The monologue was written for non-Aboriginal health care providers attending a conference on mental health and diversity, and is meant to educate people about the impact of colonization upon Aboriginals.

The event will take place March 16, 2010 at 7p.m. in the SaskTel Theatre at the Royal University Hospital.

First Nations University of Canada Pow Wow

The 32nd First Nations University of Canada Pow Wow will take place March 27th & 28th, 2010, at the Brandt Centre in Regina Saskatchewan.

Admission is $7 daily, or $10 for the weekend, and children 5 and under are free.

The Grand Entry starts at 12:00p.m. & 7:00p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Aboriginal Training Program in Museum Practices

Jameson Brant, coordinator of the Aborginal Training Program in Museum Practices is presenting an informational session offering First Nations, Metis, and Inuit participants professional and technical training in various museum practices.

A short presentation will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 from 9:00am-12:00pm in Regina, SK.

Canadian Museum Of Civilization Featuring, Profit And Ambition: The Canadian Fur Trade, 1779-1821

The Canadian Museum of Civilization presents, Profit and Ambition: The Canadian Fur Trade, 1779-1821 which is currently on display until September 12, 2010. Featuring about 250 historic artifacts, the exhibition looks at the explorers' accomplishments, the fur trade, and living and working conditions of partners and clerks, voyageurs, Aboriginal trappers and "country wives."

Statistics Canada is offering a free half-day instruction session on data that is available for First Nations, Métis and Inuit. G7 Finance Ministers To Meet In Iqaluit, Nunavut

The financial leaders from Canada, United States, Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Japan will gather on February 5-6 in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Hosted by Canada's Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, the G7 Finance Ministers meeting will be the first major event to be held in the Nunavut capital, which has a population of 6,200.

A Film Exploring Canadian Residential Schools

The Harmony Song Project of Tamara's House presents a film titled, "Muffins for Granny," playing at the Roxy Theatre on Friday, January 29th at 7:00p.m.

The documentary made by First Nations film-maker, Nadia McLaren, features seven elders who discuss their personal experiences, and the traumatic effects of Canada's Residential Schools. A panel of Saskatoon community members - Janice Acoose, Doreen Pooyak, and Gordon Tootoosis - will speak following the film, and will facilitate discussion with the audience.

Olympic Torch Relay Covers Aboriginal Sacred Ground

The 2010 Winter Olympic Torch Relay, the longest in history, reached Wanuskewin Heritage Park on Monday. Aboriginal groups have historically gathered at the site just outside of Saskatoon for over 6,000 years to live, hunt and pray. Native elders hope young people, like the hundreds gathered yesterday on sacred ground, discover 'what was and can still be'.

National Aboriginal Achievement Awards

The 17th annual National Aboriginal Achievement Awards will be held in Regina at the Conexus Arts Centre on March 26, 2010. The awards show celebrates talented First Nations, Metis and Inuit achievers from across Canada.

This year, Don Worme, a well-respected lawyer and founding member of the Indigenous Bar Association, is a local NAAA recipient. For a list of present and past recipients, click here.

2010 Year of the Inuit is an educational campaign spearheaded by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the national organization representing Canadian Inuit. The Trent University Native Association (TUNA) today is hosting it's first ever First Nations Art Festival at Trent University, Gzowski College, in the Enweying Building in Peterborough, Ontario. Louis Riel Day Events

On Monday, November 16, the Gabriel Dumont Institute, Parks Canada, and Friends of Batoche, in collaboration with SUNTEP (Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program) of Saskatoon, are hosting a Louis Riel Day to honour the Métis hero.

SUNTEP and Gabriel Dumont College Student Representative Council are also holding a Louis Riel Day Commemoration on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The event will be held at the University of Saskatchewan in the Education Student's Lounge, located in the College of Education Building. Special guest Christie Belcourt, will be sharing her art and discussing past and present Métis art. Art and information displays, jigging, singing, poetry, refreshments, and deserts will all be a part of the commemoration, recognition, and education of Métis culture and history.

Why We Need a First Nations Education Act

The Caledon Institute of Social Policy released a document on October 8, 2009 that discusses the need for a First Nations Education Act. The document is a proposal for a new Act of Parliament which would allow First Nations to establish properly funded First Nations school boards and regional educational agencies to support them.

First Nation Communities Preparing to Fight H1N1

First Nation Communities are working closely with Health Canada on pandemic planning to ensure they are prepared to fight the H1N1 flu virus. Cowessess First Nation have been taking charge of their own planning in their community for a possible outbreak and Chief Gordon Lerat recently met with Leona Aglukkaq, Federal Minster of Health, to discusses on-going cooperation on pandemic planning and preparedness.

Elder-in-Residence Recipient of Saskatchewan Order of Merit

Elder Alma Kytwayhat from the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation is one of the twelve citizens who will receive Saskatchewan's highest honour, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. She will be invested with the other 2009 recipients at ceremonies that will take place on November 5 in Saskatoon and November 17 in Regina.

First Nations Task Force to Form Health Care System

Members of the Medicine Chest Task Force and First Nations chiefs from across the province gathered to announce the control of their own health regions and pharmacies. The Task Force members are traveling to Ottawa to lobby the federal government for funding in hopes of receiving 1.8 million per year for four years.

First Nations Seeking Gaming Control in Saskatchewan

FSIN Chief Lawrence Joseph announced that aboriginal leaders want responsibility for gaming on reserves, and hopes to work with the province in lobbying Ottawa to recognize First Nation jurisdiction over gaming.

Aboriginal Stem Cell Donor Shortage

Canadian Blood Services organized an event in Manitoba to encourage Aboriginal youth to donate stem cell or bone marrow. Michael Hyduk, spokesman for Canadian Blood Services' in Manitoba said that 83 percent of stem cell and bone marrow donors are Caucasian and only 0.9 percent are Aboriginal.

First Nations Million-acre Farm Initiative

At least 18 First Nations in Saskatchewan and Alberta have agreed to lease portions of their properties to One Earth Farms Corp. creating what may become Canada's largest farm. The Canadian investment firm will lease First Nations land on which it will grow crops, raise livestock and employ aboriginal workers.

One Earth is not yet releasing the names of the First Nations it has signed lease agreements or letters of intent with, however, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine called the partnership a historic, watershed moment.
