About Me

Hi, I am justagurl24..

I am a recent graduate from the College of Education at the UofS. I am in search of a classroom of my own, in the mean time I'm settling for tutor and substitute teacher.

My areas are secondary math, computer science, accounting, and home economics.

I love technology. I live and breathe it everyday. I have grown very comfortable with the computer and vows to never leave it.

I have always wanted to be a teacher. There was no one teacher that inspired me to become a teacher. It was just a life time goal for me, I guess. I suppose it all started when I taught my sister to read when she was in kindergarten and I was in grade 1. It was kind of a weird way to start my passion. I think that may be the reason why she was placed in the advance class when she was in grade 1.... hmm..

Things I like to remember when I'm in the classroom:
- Be real, be honest, be yourself. Students forget that teachers are people too
- Include more projects and "active learning"
- Know what I want and what I want them to know
- Wear a watch
- The powerful stare always works
- Never give up on a student no matter how little progress he or she has made
- Take risks and try new teaching methods
- Practice, practice, practice. "the best performers were never born great, they worked hard to get there"

If I weren't a teacher, I would be a/an:
- architect/drafter
- food inspector
- dental hygienist
- video editor

Something personal about me?
- I'm scared of dogs
- I don't like to touch money
- I am an introvert
- I love Broadway musicals and hope to someday travel to New York to see one live.
- I make to-do lists but I procrastinate
- I grew up in a restaurant with giant woks, deep fryers, and a walk in cooler
- I am a very patient person
- I hate driving
- I love to sleep
- I enjoy sci-fi TV
- Devoted follower of Joss Whedon and his work
- I watch too much TV
- I don't like to read
- I like people who appreciate their craft

Teaching Philosophy: Be the teacher I never had.

Quotes I like:

"Don't forget to laugh"

"Not perfection but progression"

"Mathematics is like love; a simple idea, but it can complicated."

"Embrace failure. Life = risk."

"Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."

"The strongest kid is the one who walks through the halls knowing he'll be teased." (Lucas, 1986)

"In life, you won't always have homework but you'll always have people to deal with."

"I want assertive, thinking, engaged children who will tell me (eloquently, I hope) to fuck off once they're ready to remove their training wheels."

" TOPHER: Does that tie keep you warm?
BOYD: What? No.
TOPHER: No, it's just what grown-up men do in our culture. They put a piece of cloth around their necks so they can assert their status and recognize each other as non-threatening kindred.
BOYD: So what is this, the 60s? Are we gonna burn our draft cards?
TOPHER: You wear the tie because it never occurred to you not to. You eat eggs every morning but never at night. You feel excitement and companionship when rich men you've never met put a ball through a net. You feel guilty, maybe a little suspicious, every time you see that Salvation Army Santa. You look down for at least a half a second if a woman leans forward. And your stomach rumbles every time you drive by a big golden arch even if you weren't hungry before. Everybody's programmed, Boyd.
BOYD: Damn. You really spent some time on your self-justification.
TOPHER: Not the case. I don't care. This is an awesome gig. This is cutting-edge science in a house full of hot chicks. Morality is programming too." ~ Dollhouse - Echo

"The sum of Jonathan's journey is summed up perfectly when he tells Andrew, "No, I'm serious. I really miss
it. Time goes by, and everything drops away. All the cruelty, all the pain, all that humiliation. It all
washes away. I miss my friends. I miss my enemies. I miss the people I talked to every day. I miss the
people who never knew I existed. I miss 'em all. I want to talk to them, you know. I want to find out how
they're doing. I want to know what's going on in their lives." Andrew snaps back with what is probably closer
to reality: "You know what? They don't wanna talk to you; all those people you just mentioned. Not one of them
is sitting around going, 'I wonder what Jonathan's up to right now.' Not one of them cares about you." And then
Jonathan, in his last act on this earth, redeems himself for his past mistakes by saying "Well, I still care
about them. That's why I'm here." Then he gets stabbed to death, activating the Seal of Danzalthar. Damn you
Andrew! Let this moment be a tribute to the funny and sympathetic Jonathan, played touchingly by Danny Strong." ~ CriticallyTouched

"I’m the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend… I decided to live a lie… because I know you might get scared… I’ll let you go for now, hoping that you’ll fly back to me… because I think you’re worth the wait." ~ Chloe, Smallville
