Mexican Holiday: Day 11 (Heavenly Bodies and Fire in the Night)
Kevin spends another day doing nothing at the beach.
Helllo again.
The last day of February finds me doing nothing special. I spent most of the day down on the beach again. I worked a bit on my tan, swam in the ocean for a bit, and basically took it easy with a piƱa colada in my hand and a smile on my face. Here's a picture of the beach bar on the Akumal beach. People sit around the bar on swings.

This evening I went for supper at the Yucatan at about 7:30. After that I went to the bar at the Tulum lobby to have a drink (Blue Iced Tea) and listen to the live band. About 9:30 I decided to head back to my room, but walked back along the beach. As I did so, I noticed some dancing flames north of the hotel. So I walked about 500 yards north of the hotel along the beach. There I found three guys doing a firedance show for patrons of another hotel. I stayed back and watched the show from a distance (didn't want to get caught and kicked out).
About 10:30 the show finished so I headed back, stopping at the Club Diamond desk to update the blog. A nice walk on the beach at night.
I should mention the skys here at night. One of the first things I noticed when I got here was the moon. It's turned sideways!
When I first got here, it was just after the new moon. Back home, the moon is almost vertical. The points of the new moon are almost one above the other. But here, we're so much closer to the equator, the new moon forms a cup. Both the points are pointing up in the air. It's quite interesting looking up in the sky and seeing the moon lying on its side, like it needs a rest at the beach too.
Of course, all the constellations are moved too. For example, Orion is very prominent in the sky. Back home, it never gets far above the horizon. But here, like the moon, it's almost directly overhead. Everything is outta whack.
I managed to find the big dipper and I think I found the north star low on the horizon to the north. However, now we're getting on to full moon, so it's not as easy to see the stars, so I couldn't find the little dipper to be sure.
Tomorrow I may take one of the public minibuses into Playa del Carmen to do some shopping and view the sites. Just for a change of scenery. These "collectivos" will take me to town for about $20 pesos ($2 American). Not bad.
The towel buddy today was a peacock.
