Top-down "Rules" vs. Bottom-up "Association"
Since my last entry, I have become a mommy! My daughter was born 3 weeks ago; she's beautiful, and I'm a very happy researcher. :-)
I was listening to a lecture about how children learn language. (MIT OpenCourseWare, Intro to Psych. - Lecture #11.) Two theories were presented, and I was thinking about how such points of view might apply in AI as well. One theory (I thought of it as Top-down "Rules") is that children are born knowing abstract rules of language, and during their lives they learn to fill in the blanks by expanding their vocabulary, learning more complex sentence structures, etc.. A second theory (I thought of it as Bottom-up "Association") is that children learn by observing evidence -- their parents speaking, etc. -- and they observe patterns, developing a strong sense of association. For instance, you know that the word "the" often appears before a noun because you have observed that occurrence so many times; it isn't so much that there's a rule hard-wired into your brain saying so.
So -- do children start off by pre-knowing "rules"? Or, do they learn their own based on their observations? The latter seems more flexible to me.
The listener was directed to Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct for further exploration of the topic.
I thought you could ask the same question about machines: Would an intelligent machine be pre-programmed with rules, or, would it just kinda go with the flow according to the highest probability?
This is a bit of an unsatisfying conclusion to this blog entry; I wish I could cite some systems as examples of each approach.
Hrm. Well, maybe I can.
I've seen systems where rules are pre-programmed in; in fact it's necessary that *some* knowledge is pre-programmed in, such as the task domain knowledge. (Would raw facts in a task domain ontology be considered "rules" in this sense, though?)
I've seen pedagogical rules (like prerequisites, etc.) be pre-programmed in. This one is up for debate: I think that you could used either a case based reasoning / collaborative filtering approach (like in a recommender system) *or* pre-programmed rules to organize prerequisite relationships.
I think that student modelling pretty much has to be probability/evidence based... or use constraint-based modelling... because the only way the machine can know about what's going on inside the learner's head is by observing their actions.
I'm constantly keeping an eye on this study of learning in AIED: Is it the machine who is learning, or is it the learner who is learning? Both, of course -- it's just important to keep in mind which one you're talking about as you are designing a particular functionality.
Hrm. Well, that's pretty good food-for-thought. For now. Ooorgh. So much work to do!

Suppose the "Subject Expert" discovers an advancement in science and needs to update the "world's" domain knowledge. (I used the "Subject Expert" terminology from Ontologies to Support Learning Design Context - Thanks Chris) How would they make corrections to ontologies and learning objects, or at least point the users of "old" objects towards adopting the newer ones.
