NEW UPGRADES FOR GRIFFITHS STADIUM

Heavy equipment will soon be tearing up the turf at Griffiths Stadium.

A second series of upgrades to Griffiths Stadium has been approved by the Board of Governors in order to get the facility ready for the 2006 Huskie football season, and for the 2006 Vanier Cup.

Construction of a new team building, a new washroom and concession building, and renovations to existing team and classroom/office space, at a total cost of $2.57 million, recently got the go-ahead. Also approved was the installation of artificial turf, artificial lighting and an east-side grandstand, expansion of the media box and construction of an enhanced entrance gate.

Most of these changes are required to fulfill the University’s successful bid to host the university football championship game in November.

The project is being paid for by community donations and work will be done by Sept. 2 the first Huskie football homegame.

First opened in 1936 with a playing field, running track and grandstand, Griffiths Stadium was moved east of its original site to its current location in 1967. Additions and renovations were done in 1962, 1971 and 1976, then again in 1988 prior to the Jeux Canada Games.
