New View

A new University webcam that has brightened up the picture and changed the view for Internet users interested in taking a look at the University of Saskatchewan campus online has also be used to make a Welcome Week movie.
Installed in the mechanical room atop the College Building, the camera captures activity in the Bowl with the Arts Tower and Thorvaldson in the distant background. Kevin Lowey, who is the webcam project co-ordinator with Information Technology Services, said the new location gives viewers a better perspective than that of the first bowl-cam that is located on the main floor of the Physics Building.
The new camera was installed in accordance with the Saskatchewan Privacy Commission’s guidelines for use of security cameras, said Lowey. Webcam viewers will not be able to identify individuals in the shot so its installation is not considered an invasion of privacy, he explained.
In addition to the two bowl cameras, CTV operates a Skycam in partnership with the University from the Arts Tower looking out over Thorvaldson. All three can be viewed at Webcams.
All three cameras create website slide shows of images over the previous 24-hour period, and Lowey has used all the 15-minute interval images taken by the new camera during Welcome Week to create a time-lapse movie of activities in the Bowl. To watch, go to Movies.
