Parking Rates on the Rise

Effective May 1, it will cost more to park in some areas of campus although the amount of the increase will vary.

Wendy Novakovski, a supervisor with Parking Services, said the cost of parking at a meter will go up between 25 and 50 cents per hour, depending on the location. In some pay lots, the price per hour will rise by 50 cents, creating a standard rate in all pay lots of $1 per half-hour.

Even with the standard hourly rate, the daily maximum charged in pay parking lots will still vary, she said. One significant change will be in the daily maximum for the Agriculture parkade which will increase from $7 to $10 per day. Novakovski said that heated underground facility is premium parking “and the price should reflect that.”

After hours parking in all lots and at all meters will go from $2 to $3 for four hours.

Novakovski said the rate increases reflect the rising cost of clearing, cleaning, maintaining and upgrading parking areas across campus.

The price charged for student parking is also increasing for the first time in about 10 years. Novakovski said students will pay about $20 more for an eight-month parking permit but the cost of parking in the non-electrified lot is actually declining. That lot is rarely full and Parking Services hopes the rate decrease will make the space more attractive to students.

She added a reminder that motorcycles require a permit to park in designated areas on campus. The cost of that permit is $25 plus GST.

Parking Services maintains and operates 960 pay parking stalls in the Stadium and Agriculture parkades and about 600 meters around campus as well as parking lots for faculty, staff and students.
