Class of 2009 - Switching Gears
The path to law school was a unique one for Alison Fingas.
Alison Fingas
Fingas completed her first degree in professional music at Southwestern Community College in Iowa before returning to Saskatchewan to enrol in the College of Law in 2006. She will take part in spring convocation before moving to Ottawa to clerk in the Federal Court. Despite the change in career paths, Fingas said she is pleased with her decision to come to law school at the University of Saskatchewan.
“It’s been amazing. A much better experience than I anticipated. It’s a complete learning experience,” said Fingas. “The law college profs are fantastic. They’re willing to do whatever it takes to make your schooling a success and help you out in your career.”
Fingas was actively involved outside of the classroom as well. She was a student volunteer for Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City Inc (CLASSIC). “All in all, it was one of the best opportunities I had in law school. CLASSIC totally embodies what I want to do with my life.”
Fingas also worked as one of the managing editors for the Saskatchewan Law Review and as a teaching assistant in a legal research and writing class. Although she had dismissed teaching as a career choice while taking her music degree, she can now see herself possibly teaching law some day.
Even though her career path has changed, Fingas still sings occasionally, although not as much as she would like. She said she sings mostly for herself, but she did perform at Legal Follies twice during her three years of law.
Getting involved in activities like the follies and volunteering enriched Fingas’ experience at the U of S. “The main key about law school is you really do get out what you put in.” Laughing, she added, “Even though it seems very serious and scary at the time, enjoy it while it lasts.”
