Public health director named

Robert Buckingham has been appointed the executive director of the School of Public Health, effective Sept. 1.

Buckingham helped found the first hospice in the United States and has since developed 81 hospices in seven countries, including a pediatric hospice for children with AIDS. In addition, he has authored 17 books and has travelled around the world educating people about public health. He is currently a professor at New Mexico State University.

Currently a professor at New Mexico State University, Buckingham has a BA in government from the University of Arizona, an MA in social anthropology from Wesleyan University, and a PhD in public health from Yale University. He has served as an assistant professor at Columbia University, an associate professor and president of the American Association of University Professors Chapter at the University of Arizona, a professor at City University of New York, and as dean of the College of Health and Human Performance at Minnesota State University.
