Collaboration the key ingredient for Smyth
Serene Smyth is currently pursuing her master’s degree in kinesiology, and she chose the University of Saskatchewan for graduate studies partially because of the variety of disciplines offered.

“We have one of the best kinesiology graduate programs in Canada,” Smyth said. “We’re also really multi-disciplined, and we’re always encouraged to work with other departments, other health sciences and other faculty members.”
Smyth said having access to a variety of related disciplines allows for collaboration on large projects, and provides a number of options for her PhD, should she choose to change subjects.
Smyth received her undergraduate degree in sport health and physical education at Vancouver Island University. Although her focus on wellness has remained the same, she said graduate school is a completely different experience.
“It doesn’t feel as hectic. Everything is cumulative, and it builds on itself. So even if you’re busy, everything is working toward one goal.”
