College of Law wins national awards at mediation competition

The College of Law won two awards at the Canadian National Mediation Advocacy Competition (CNMAC) in Toronto including the Louise Otis Award for excellence in educating students on non-litigation alternatives to resolve disputes.

The Louise Otis Award for Excellence in Mediation Education is awarded to the law school demonstrating the greatest commitment to mediation education by the Canadian National Mediation Advocacy Competition. This inaugural award was presented November 21, 2009 in Toronto to Brent Cotter, dean of the college. Presenting the award was Madame Justice Louise Otis, Court of Appeal of Québec education.

Law student Hiyasmin Matias won the Cliff Hendler Award for Most Outstanding Individual. The competition, involving 14 two-member teams from eight faculties of law across Canada, conducted role-playing scenarios as advocates and clients in mediation.

The team from the college, four of our 3rd year Law College students, Meredith James, Itemobong Umoh, Alexis Tayco, Hiyasmin Matias and their coaches Kathryn Ford, Q.C. and Glen Gardner, placed 4th overall in the Canadian National Mediation Advocacy Competition (CNMAC).
