U of S requests $13.2 million increase in provincial government grant
by Colleen MacPherson
Having taken into account both its own budget adjustments and the current economic uncertainty in Saskatchewan, the University of Saskatchewan is making a request to the province for a 5.2 per cent, or $13.2 million, increase in its base operating grant for 2010-11.

Ginger Appel, director of budget strategy and planning
The request, which will move the grant to $265.9 million from $252 million in 2009-10, is contained in the university’s annual operations forecast, a summary of the institution’s financial needs that was submitted to the province in mid-November.
“We’re trying to be prudent with our request,” said Ginger Appel, director of budget strategy and planning in Institutional Planning and Assessment. “We know that markets are starting to recover (from the global downturn) but commodities aren’t, and we’re definitely hearing from the province that this is going to be a challenging year for them. We’ve done prudent financial management to ensure our budget is reasonable to cover our liabilities and we’re asking the government to fund us at a reasonable rate.”
