Relay dream

Being part of the Olympic games has been Crystal Parton’s dream since she was a little girl, so her participation in the 2010 Torch Relay might bring on a few tears.

“For some athletes, it’s their dream to win a medal, or participate in the opening ceremonies. So, if you can’t be in the Olympics, then it’s nice to be a part of it,” Crystal Parton said prior to her Jan. 11 relay run. “I’m nervous and excited about carrying the torch and I’ll probably cry.”

For the past 12 years, Parton has lit up the dining rooms in the Faculty Club, Marquis Hall, Boffins and Louis’ with her big smile and jovial personality. “I’ve worked everywhere on this campus,” she joked.

Parton applied for a spot on the relay team, along with about 25,000 others, through the Royal Bank of Canada which selected 3,000 people based on their Olympic pledge. Her pledge, “to collect used athletic shoes for kids,” earned her a spot.
