The Versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

cohen_hallelujah.jpgNow that I've started down the path of research and discovery, it's hard to stop. After posting previously about Jeff Buckley singing Hallelujah, I kept on looking for more versions of this song. This eventually led to the question that people are asking:where are the missing verses? Are there really fifteen (15) different verses for Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah?

----

First off, here is a comparative look at the five major versions that I found of this song, and their choices and arrangements of verses:

Hallelujah
Version 1:
Leonard Cohen, from Various Positions (1984)

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Version 2:
Leonard Cohen, from Cohen Live (1994)

Baby, I've been here before.
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch,
But listen love is not some kind of victory march,
It's a cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do ya?
But I remember when I moved in you,
And the holy dove was moving too,
And every single breath that we drew was Hallelujah

Maybe there's a god above
As for me, all I ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew ya
But it's not a complaint that you hear tonight,
It's not the laughter of someone who claims to have seen the light
It's a cold and it's a very lonely Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come all this way to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand right here before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Version 3:
Jeff Buckley, from Grace (1994)

I heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Well baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you?
And remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Well maybe there's a god above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who'd out drew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah 95
Version 4:
Bono, from The Complete Solo Projects of Bono, v1 (1997)

I heard there was a secret chord
That David played to please the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
Well I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my lips but Hallelujah

Now maybe there's a god above
But all I ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's no complaint you hear tonight,
And it's not some pilgrim who's seen the light
It's a cold and broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Version 5:
Leonard Cohen, from Live in London (2008)

I've heard there was this secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Now maybe there's a god above
As for me, all I ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who out drew you
But it's not a cry that you hear tonight
It's not some pilgrim who claims to have seen the light, no
It's a cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah

Oh people I've been here before
I know this room and I've walked this floor
You see, I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But listen love is not some kind of victory march, no
It's a cold and it's a very lonely Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never even show it to me do you?
Now remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove she was moving too
And every single breath that we drew was Hallelujah

I've done my best, I know it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come here to (London) just to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand right here before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

I've kept version 1 as the original from 1984, only because that seemed like the right thing to do. In addition to the versions above, there are also some minor wording variations from performance to performance, but I'm not detailing those, let's call them artistic interpretation of the same basic idea. All totaled I count seven different verses. However, if one so chose, each of the verses could be broken up into two smaller verses, like this:

1: Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?

2: Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Although I think this is somewhat artificial, it does at least account for fourteen of the fifteen verses that are rumored to exist. This splitting up of verses is also supported by others who have transcribed the song's lyrics, as in here: http://leonardcohenfiles.com/album11.html##G

But what of the fifteenth? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one. And if there really was a fifteenth verse, remember that since we've broken each verse into two smaller ones, it would really have to be a 2 or 3 line verse.

So my conclusion is the true number of different verses is either seven large verses (as split above) or fourteen small verses (if you wish to split them apart) - either way, it amounts to the same. I would be happy to be proven wrong - if you find something I've missed, please make a comment below.

There is a good collection of thoughts on this song at http://www.webheights.net/speakingcohen/denver.htm that you might also want to check out.

Thanks for collecting these versions and laying them all out for us.

By the way, There weren't 15 verses; according to John Cale, Cohen faxed him 15 PAGES of verses--some 80 verses in all-- for him to use in composing his 1991 cover of the song.
