Scoring a Four-Ender With Only Three Rocks to Throw

sui_swe_world_women_2010I've been watching the Ford World Women's curling event for a few days now, and although it's exciting, it's also disappointingly full of mistakes. At least, though, we can take a look at one of them that is bound to become famous and try to learn from it.

Drag Effect on Curling Rocks

drag_effect_still.gifI had been hearing about the "drag effect" or "drag theory" of curling rocks on television for a few years, but up until last week I had never truly seen a clear example of it. Now I have, and here's the video and an explanation of what's going on.

Winning Curling Through Psychology

sweeping.jpgWe recently won a game of curling 11 to 0. Yes, we shut out the other team completely, and we never once had hammer that game. We did not, however, curl an exceptional game. We were curling "about average". So why did we win? Did the other team just make too many mistakes? Was it that simple?

Masters of Curling Grand Slam in Saskatoon

kevinmartin_grandslam.jpgI volunteered at the Masters of Curling Grand Slam event that took place in Saskatoon this past weekend. It was interesting to see "behind the scenes" and experience curling from the other side of the television.

The Game-Saving Shot and Sportsmanship

game_shot_1It was one of the last games of the season in our Friday night mixed curling league, and for the first seven ends it was going well.... The score was 8 to 6 for us and the seventh end had just ended by the opposition scoring one point. This meant that we only had the eighth end to play and we were up by two points coming home with the hammer. How much better could our situation have been?

The Balance of Judgement

curling_sweeping.jpgI like sweeping! It's a great part of the game of curling, and something that I would much rather do in a game than have to formulate the strategy like the skip does. I have two stories to tell about sweeping that, in the end, aren't completely all about sweeping as much as they are about having confidence in yourself.

Both stories involve sparing for other teams...

Being Skip is Hard

My first season of curling was last year, and during that time I only had the opportunity to play in the skip (fourth) position once. And that game didn't *really* count as skipping, since it turned out to be less about curling and more about socializing.

This year - yes, my second season of curling - I'm skipping a team in a mixed league. The team consists of me and my wife along with another couple. I am only now finding out how much difficult it is to skip a team instead of just playing on one...

Everyone's a Winner

February 2005 and it's nearing the end of curling season. I get a phone call just after supper, asking if I'll spare on a mixed team for a game later that night. No problem!
