National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. They died because they were women.

As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

This years event will be taking place at the Army, Navy & Airforce (359 1st Avenue North) at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. As part of the event, there will be two documentary screenings of Polytechnique:

November 28 -7:00 to 9:00 p.m. (Room 146 in the Arts building)

December 1 – 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. (Room 241 in the Arts building)

If you have any questions about the event, please contact the USSU Women's Centre at 966-6980

Movember

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces, in Canada and around the world. With their Mo's, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men's health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valour by either throwing their own Movember party.

Join us at Louis' November 29th for the Stache Bash.
