The USSU announced today that the offices for many of its Centres, including the Pride, Women’s, Food, and Victim Advocate, are to be temporarily relocated to the Lower Level of Saskatchewan Hall.
The relocation is expected to be completed within six weeks (approximately the end of February).
The USSU Main Office currently located in Lower Place Riel, is also scheduled to relocate to the first floor of the Memorial Union Building (MUB), to take the space currently occupied by the USSU Women’s Centre, Pride Centre and Victim Advocate.
The decision to relocate the Centres was due to office location adjustments needed to prepare for the renovation of the Place Riel Student Centre. While final University Board of Governors approval has not been provided, it is widely anticipated that the renovation project will begin as early as April of this year.
USSU President Josie Steeves said the USSU was left with little choice but to relocate the Centres because of a recent decision by the University’s Facilities Management Division (FMD).
“We had originally planned to move many of the administrative offices currently located in Lower Place Riel to Lower Sask Hall,” said Steeves. “However, FMD determined that there were too many staff and Executive members to occupy the available space in Sask Hall, which left us with little option but to move administrative offices into the MUB.”
The USSU also reached an agreement with FMD to provide necessary upgrades to Lower Sask Hall to accommodate for the USSU Centres.
“FMD said that the USSU Centres can relocate to Lower Sask Hall only after upgrades to the ventilation system are made,” said Steeves. “We will also upgrade the quality of the rooms with re-carpeting and repainting.”
Relocation of the USSU Centres and administration is expected to last approximately 18 months.
“Obviously this is not an ideal situation for everyone involved, but there’s a big reward at the end of the tunnel,” said Steeves. “Eventually the Centres will move back to the MUB, and students at the University will have first class student centre that will serve their needs for many years to come.”
