Safewalk

I’d like to start by introducing myself, my name is Ata Merat and I am the new Safewalk/StudentCrew coordinator. I am a second year Electrical Engineering student. I am glad to be part of the USSU and work with great people on campus. I love the fact that this job gives me an opportunity to meet many new people, including students and faculty members.

Safewalk is a service offered by the USSU in partnership with Campus Safety that provides students and faculty the option of a safe walk home or to their car. Safewalk operates Sunday through Thursday from 8:30pm – 11:30pm. Safewalk as a service does not imply that our campus is dangerous at night, but rather, ensures that students and faculty have the option of peace of mind. We’re here to make sure everyone feels safe on their campus.

Volunteering with Safewalk is a great way to meet new people and get involved with the community. Safewalk allows student volunteers to explore campus while they act as escorts to those using the service. If you’re looking for a fun, interactive volunteering opportunity, look no further! You can apply online or drop in to the Centre located in Lower Place Riel, Room B3.

Here are a couple of safety tips to remember next time you’re walking around campus: try to walk in a group after dark, avoid dim-lit areas, have your cell phone handy, and stay alert and stay safe! If you ever forget these important safety tips, Bert and Gert are always there to help!

Stay safe out there,
Ata
