Safewalk

As we are wrapping things up at Safewalk, we are in the process of organizing our yearly volunteer appreciation event (Spring Fling).

This year, we are meeting at Louis'.Throughout the night, the Gaff (a noted local DJ) will be providing us with some beats.  The entire event will also be MC'd by one of USSU's very own Drag Queens! So if you volunteered at a USSU Centre make sure to talk to the Coordinator and let them know you are coming.

On a different note, the Safewalk program is still continuing on.  We are in the process of  planning a walk for the missing student Hamza, to take place on April 6th.  We would like to encourage students and other community members to continue talking about it therefore, if you are interested in helping us maintain awareness of his disappearance, please contact me for more details at safe.walk@ussu.ca. For those of you interested in helping out with the search, we are putting together a volunteer search team, that will be ready to help out when requested! Let me know of you are interested.

As you stay on campus late to study, I encourage you to stay in groups and call Safewalk for someone to walk you home after!

Take Care,

Candlelight Vigil for Hamza Alsharief

Hello everyone!

Some of you may be aware that we are having a Candlelight Vigil for Hamza Alsharief.  We hope that we are able to increase awareness of his disappearance, as well as provide hope and support to his family and friends.  The City Police also offered to call us when they needed help with the search.  We thought it would be nice to have students come together, and volunteer with the search team.  So, we will let you know when we hear back from the Police!

In the mean time, please spread the word about the Vigil.  It will be taking place on Wednesday, February 15th, from 5:30pm-6pm in the Bowl.  Everyone is welcome! We also ask that you bring a candle, if possible.

For those of you studying late on campus, remember to call Safewalk 966-SAFE(7233) if you need someone to come in and check up on you.  Wishing you all the best in your exams!

Ru :)

Be Safe On Campus

At the UofS, we are blessed to be a low crime campus, compared to other Canadian universities. However, we still live in a city with one of the highest rates of crime per capita, in the world.  Campus Safety works hard through out the year to maintain safety on our campus.  Each year they post statistics of crime activity/operations on campus on their website . In 2011, there was a total of 365 suspicious vehicles or persons that were reported, 27 reports of harassment, I sexual assault and 1 robbery.

Every now and then Campus Safety will require your assistance in identifying potential culprits.  Make sure you check out their website once in a while to see if you've spotted any of the people identified.

Although we experience a low count of crime activity, we continue to encourage people of the UofS community to not walk alone at night and if needed contact Safewalk at 966-SAFE(7233).

Currently, the Saskatoon Police and many others, are requesting assistance in finding a UofS student that went missing in December.  The search for Hamza Alsharief, has not yet located his whereabouts.  However, we all remain hopeful that our fellow student is safe.  If you have seen him or have any information regarding the whereabouts of Hamza Alsharief, please contact the Saskatoon Police Service at 975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Take Care.
