A NEW HOME TO FLY IN
Our original outdoor flight barn, which was built in the 1980s, was recently condemned by Saskatchewan Health and Safety. Most of the health and safety issues could not be resolved unless the barn was completely rebuilt.
The flight barn’s closure left us with only small indoor enclosures to work with our patients — facilities that are far from ideal when rehabilitating wild birds of prey and building up flight strength.
A NEW FLIGHT FACILITY
Long before the barn was condemned, dedicated WEAMS students and their supervisor, Dr. Dennilyn Parker, have been developing a plan for a new outdoor facility and raising funds to support its construction.
The 4,488-square-foot facility will consist of 14 enclosures in three different sizes and with an overall roof height of 12 feet. The rodent-proof barn will have adequate lighting, heating, drainage and electricity.
WEAMS members are working with the University of Saskatchewan’s Facilities Management Division to ensure that the building plan meets all university standards.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The estimated cost of this new facility is nearly $50,000, and so far, WEAMS has raised nearly $9,000 for the project. An $8,000 donation from the Western Canadian Veterinary Students’ Association has been a major boost for the project, and WEAMS continues to raise money through its fund raising efforts.
SUPPORT OUR FUTURE PLANS
WEAMS has made significant progress in developing this new flight facility, but we still have a lot to accomplish. Your support can help us reach that goal: click here to learn more about how you can contribute to WEAMS and to the new flight facility.
