Lobster Head Kevin

Kevin discusses his first full day in San Francisco. Sights seen, places visited, head's burned ...

Hi all. Sorry for the delay in posting to the blog. Had some trouble getting wireless access going.

Sunday I got up early and decided to walk down to Fisherman's Warf. It was interesting walking through the various neighborhoods. Union Square, Chinatown, etc. The walk was only a couple miles.

Along the way I stopped off at Telegraph hill. Have some pictures from the top of the tower that I'll try to share later.

Then got down to Fisherman's Warf. Walked around a bit. Then went to the aquarium. Hint, if you want to see the aquarium AND take a boat tour go the the aquarium first because you getr $8 off the boat tour. The aquarium had a nice underwater walkway and a petting zoo where you can pet sharks and rays. Fun.

I then went straight from there to the bay tour. Hopped on a boat which went out to the Golden Gate bridge, then back around Alcatraz island. It was a nice sunny day, until we got to the fog bank that covered most of the bridge. We could only see half-way up the towers when we were under it, and couldn't see the bridge at all from a distance. More on the sunshine later ...

From there I went on a tour of a WWII Submarine. Talked to a few veterans who served on submarines. They said they loved getting tours of Canadian and British subs. They always arranged to have the tour around "tea time" when the daily allocation of Rum was distributed.
It was amazing how cramped it is in a sub.

Right beside that was a museum of all sorts of "penny arcade" machines. Player pianos, anamatronic fortune tellers, old-style slide show machines of the turn of the century, etc.

It was no about 3:00pm, so I wanted to get back to the hotel for registration. I went to the cable car turn around, but turns out three of the four cars were broken down, so they provided free busses back to where the hotel was.

About this time, I started noticing a "pinprick" feeling on my head. It was then that I remembered I was out in the hot California sun all day without my hat. Oh oh. Got back to the hotel and my head looks like a lobster.

It's now two days later, and my head still hurts. I'm pretty sure I'm going to start peeling soon. Next time I'll remember my hat.

Well, the next session is about to start, so I'd better be going. More updates later.
